    摘要: A disk drive includes a rotatable storage disk, a suspension, and a slider assembly. The slider assembly includes a slider body, a first slider deformer and a second slider deformer. Activation of the first slider deformer deforms the slider body, and activation of the second slider deformer deforms the slider body. Further, the slider deformers can be independently controllable. The read element is positioned near the first slider deformer and the write element is positioned near the second slider deformer. Activation of the first slider deformer adjusts a read head-to-disk spacing of the read element and activation of the second slider deformer adjusts a write head-to-disk spacing of the write element. Further, activation of the first slider deformer does not significantly influence the write head-to-disk spacing and activation of the second slider deformer does not significantly influence the read head-to-disk spacing.

    摘要: A method of determining side track erasure in a disk drive having a disk and a transducer. A target track and one or more side tracks proximate to the target track on the disk are selected, and recording parameters for recording signals on the target track and each side track with the transducer are selected. Thereafter, signals are recorded on each side track and then signals are recorded on the target track multiple times. A reduction in the integrity of the recorded signals on each side track due to recording signals on the target track multiple times is detected, and the detected reduction in the integrity of the recorded signals on each side track represents the amount of the erasure of the recorded signals on the side track. Recording parameters are changed based on the signal integrity reduction to minimize side track erasure.

    摘要: A PTP test subsystem of a magnetic disk drive identifies an undesired pole tip protrusion (PTP) condition, and takes steps to prevent problems associated with PTP. A PTP stressing mechanism stresses the disk drive during a PTP test mode to induce a PTP condition. A disk contact detection circuit detects when a head of the disk drive contacts the disk. A PTP write current determining circuit is also provided which comprises a write current level detector to ascertain a write current level at which the disk contact detection circuit detects when the head of the disk drive contacts the disk while the disk drive is stressed during the PTP test mode.

    摘要: A system and method for decreasing power consumption of hard disk drives through use of an external atmosphere of low density gas, such as helium, is described. An environment container reasonably resistant to diffusion and leakage of helium (container) is erected around an existing hard disk array or server, wherein a helium mixture is pumped into the container. The helium mixture within the container is maintained at a specified concentration via proper tubing and valves which may be manually or automatically controlled. The actual concentration need not be very pure in order to achieve reduced drag over the disks in each of the hard disk drives, thereby achieving reduced power consumption. The environment container is stand alone from the hard disk drives used such that an altered hard disk apparatus is unnecessary.

    摘要: The preferred embodiments of the present invention are devices and processes for producing high resolution lithography or pattern formation on the nanometer scale, using a voltage-biased probe that is slider-mounted along with, or separate from but linked to, a magnetic read head within a HDD mechanism. The probe is guided and positioned over a target layer by the motion of the read head which is, itself, guided by signals from servo tracks on a magnetic layer that activate an electromechanical servomechanism within the HDD. An electric field produced by the probe is capable of modifying the surface of the target layer over which the probe flies either directly, or by current induced or thermally induced effects. Targets such as amorphous or crystalline silicon can be hydrogen passivated and the electric field will produce oxidized or anodized lines with nanometer resolution.
