A purified xylanase derived from B. Pumilus PRL B12 is disclosed. This xylanase is efficient for use in the biobleaching of wood pulp, permitting a strong reduction in the quantity of chlorine used and AOX compounds produced in classical and ECF wood pulp bleaching sequences as well as the quantity of ozone used in TCF sequences. The gene coding for the xylanase was isolated and purified and used to construct an expression vector therefor. A recombinant host strain of B. licheniformis is also disclosed which is efficient for expressing heterologous enzymes, including the xylanase when transformed by the expression vector.

Novel, optimized highly alkaline proteases which are suitable for use in detergent formulations are prepared by employing microorganisms transformed by mutated DNA sequences. The mutated sequences are obtained starting from DNA sequences which code for highly alkaline protease usually produced by Bacillus species by altering these DNA sequences in defined positions by directed mutagenesis (point mutation) in such a way that the codon in which the point mutation is located now codes for an amino acid which is more strongly basic than the original amino acid. The result is highly alkaline proteases in which original amino acids have been replaced by more strongly basic amino acids, preferably by the amino acids lysine or arginine. Synthetic oligonucleotides, DNA sequences, vectors and transformed microorganisms which are used for generating and obtaining the optimized highly alkaline protease are also described.

Disclosed herein are phenol oxidizing enzymes obtainable from species of Stachybotrys which are useful in modifying the color associated with dyes and colored compounds, as well as in anti-dye transfer applications. Also disclosed herein are biologically-pure cultures of strains of the genus Stachybotrys, designated herein Stachybotrys parvispora MUCL 38996 and Stachybotrys charatarum MUCL 38898, which are capable of naturally-producing the novel phenol oxidizing enzymes. Disclosed herein is the amino acid and nucleic acid sequence for Stachybotrys phenol oxidizing enzymes as well as expression vectors and host cells comprising the nucleic acid. Disclosed herein are methods for producing the phenol oxidizing enzyme as well as methods for constructing expression host. Disclosed herein are enzyme compositions comprising phenol oxidizing enzymes obtainable from species of Stachybotrys.
