Bleaching compositions, laundry and automatic dishwashing detergent compositions comprising multiple-substituted bleach activators which have at least one quaternary nitrogen atom, are provided. More specifically, the invention relates to compositions which provide enhanced cleaning/bleaching benefits though the selection of multiple-substituted quaternary bleach activators having specific leaving groups with a conjugate acid aqueous pK.sub.a above 13 and with advantageous ratios of rate of perhydrolysis to rate of hydrolysis and of rate of perhydrolysis to rate of diacylperoxide production. Included are preferred activator compounds and methods for washing fabrics, hard surfaces, and tableware using the activators.

The synthesis of polyhydroxy fatty acid amide surfactants exemplified by the compound C.sub.11 H.sub.23 C(O)N(CH.sub.3)CH.sub.2 [CHOH].sub.4 CH.sub.2 OH by reacting a fatty acid ester with an N-alkyl sugar amine can result in contamination of the product surfactant by residual sources of fatty acids. These residual fatty acids may be unacceptable in high sudsing detergent compositions, such as dishwashing liquids, especially with Ca or Mg cations. The process of this invention reacts such contaminants with alkyl amines or, especially, ethanolamine, to convert them into fatty alkyl- or alkanolamides, which are quite acceptable in fully-formulated detergent compositions for home or industrial use.

Detergent compositions which comprise from about 0.05 to about 95% by weight of a water-soluble cationic compound having clay soil removal/anti-redeposition properties. These compounds are selected from ethoxylated cationic monoamines, ethoxylated cationic diamines, ethoxylated cationic polyamines, ethoxylated cationic polymers, and mixtures thereof. In addition to the cationic compounds, the detergent compositions further comprise from about 1 to about 75% by weight of a nonionic, anionic, ampholytic, zwitterionic, or cationic detergent surfactant or mixture thereof. In addition to these detergent surfactants, the detergent composition can optionally comprise from 0 to about 80% by weight of a detergent builder.

L also contains the polyoxyalkylene moiety --[(R'O).sub.m (CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n ]--, wherein R' is C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 alkylene or hydroxyalkylene, m and n are numbers such that the moiety --(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n -- is at least about 50% by weight of said polyoxyalkylene moiety, and n is at least about 3. These cationic polymers are useful in detergent compositions.
