Abstract: In at least one embodiment, a process to produce a poly alpha-olefin (PAO) includes introducing a first alpha-olefin to a first catalyst system comprising activator and a metallocene compound into a continuous stirred tank reactor or a continuous tubular reactor under first reactor conditions to form a first reactor effluent. The first alpha-olefin is introduced to the reactor at a flow rate of about 100 g/hr or more. The first reactor effluent includes at least 60 wt % of PAO dimer and 40 wt % or less of higher oligomers, where the higher oligomers are oligomers that have a degree of polymerization of 3 or more. The process includes introducing the first reactor effluent and a second alpha-olefin to a second catalyst composition including an acid catalyst in a second reactor to form a second reactor effluent comprising PAO trimer.

Abstract: A block copolymer comprising a PAO block derived from alpha-olefin monomer(s) having a carbon backbone comprising more than six (6) carbon atoms per molecule and a poly(alkyl methacrylate) block derived from alkyl methacrylate monomer(s) having an alkyl group comprising at least six (6) carbon atoms forms micelles in hydrocarbon solvents and lubricant oil base stocks with large space volume even at low overall molecular weight. The block copolymer of this disclosure is particularly advantageous as viscosity modifier for lubricant oil compositions.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to cold cranking simulator viscosity (“CCSV”) boosting base stocks that allow flexibility for engine oil formulations to meet both high and low temperature viscosity requirements while maximizing fuel efficiency. The CCSV-boosting base stocks can include C28-C60 hydrocarbon materials, linear esters, tertiary amides, dialkyl carbonates, aromatic alcohols, and aromatic ethers. This disclosure also relates to lubricating oil formulations containing the CCSV-boosting base stocks, and a method for improving fuel efficiency in an engine by using as engine oil a lubricating oil formulation containing one or more of the CCSV-boosting base stocks.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides processes and apparatus for producing poly alpha olefins. In at least one embodiment, a process to produce a poly alpha olefin includes introducing a first olefin monomer to a first catalyst and an activator in a first reactor to form a first reactor effluent comprising olefin dimers and olefin timers. The process includes heating the first reactor effluent to form an isomerized product and introducing the isomerized product to a filtration unit to form a filtration effluent. The process may include introducing the filtration effluent to a first distillation unit to form a first distillation effluent. The process may include introducing the first distillation effluent to a second distillation unit to form a second distillation effluent. The process includes introducing the first distillation effluent and/or the second distillation effluent to a second catalyst in a second reactor to form a second reactor effluent comprising the olefin timers.

Abstract: A process for producing alpha-olefin dimers comprises contacting, at a temperature of 80° C. or more, a feedstock comprising at least one C8+ (linear) alpha-olefin with a catalyst system comprising activator and one or more catalyst compounds represented by the formula: where M is a Group 4 metal; n is 1, 2, or 3; RA is hydrogen or a C1 to C10 alkyl; each of R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, and R8 is independently selected from hydrogen and C1 to C10 alkyl; each X is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl radicals having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, hydrides, amides, alkoxides, sulfides, phosphides, halides, and a combination thereof, (two X's may form a part of a fused ring or a ring system), the contacting being conducted under conditions effective to oligomerize at least part of C8+ alpha-olefin to produce an oligomerized product containing at least 30 wt % of the alpha-olefin dimer and at least 80 mol % of vinylidene unsaturation, where the conversion of the alpha olefin is at least 10 wt %, based upon the weight of the alpha olefin monomer entering the reactor and the weight of dimer produced.

In at least one embodiment, a process includes functionalizing and/or hydrogenating a PAO product of the present disclosure. In at least one embodiment, a blend includes a PAO product of the present disclosure.
