Abstract: A laser system for body tissue treatment has laser source, control device, scanner, and handpiece with treatment head transparent to the laser beam. An incoming laser beam section enters the treatment head longitudinally. The treatment head has a conical output surface with a minimum and a maximum surface radius and a half opening angle for total reflection of the incoming beam section. The reflected beam section is refracted radially into an emerging beam section away from the treatment head through the output surface. The incoming beam section has at the output surface a mean diameter that is ≦a difference of maximum surface radius and minimum scanning radius. A conical scanning surface as a part of the conical output surface extends from the minimum scanning radius to the maximum surface radius. The control device controls the scanner for scanning the conical scanning surface with the incoming beam section.

Abstract: A dental irrigation system is provided with a laser source for generating a laser beam and an optical delivery system for the laser beam. The laser beam wavelength ranges from 0.4 μm to 11.0 μm. The laser system operates in pulsed operation with pulse sets of 2 to 20 individual pulses of temporally limited pulse length. The pulse sets follow one another with temporal separation. The individual pulses follow one another with pulse repetition rate. The laser system generates at least one vapor bubble within the liquid irradiated with the laser beam. A single pulse causes the vapor bubble to oscillate between a maximal and a minimal volume with a bubble oscillation frequency. The pulse repetition rate within one pulse set is adjusted relative to the bubble oscillation frequency such that synchronization between delivery of the pulses and bubble oscillation is achieved.

Abstract: A laser treatment head guides a laser beam to a target area within a body cavity and includes a laser output element having a deflection element. The laser output element with deflection element is rotatable relative to a guide element about an axis. First and second thread elements mutually engage to cause the deflection element to perform a combined axial and rotational movement relative to the guide element. A control unit and the laser treatment head are configured such that the target area is irradiated by individual pulses (p) in a helical pattern of irradiation spots over a section of the circumference of the body cavity. The control unit is further configured such that reference locations (X) on the target area are irradiated by an individual pulse number (N) of subsequent pulses (p), thereby heating the mucosa tissue within the target area to a predetermined temperature.

Abstract: A method for treating a fungal infection in an infected nail is disclosed. An embodiment includes placing an optical delivery system designed to deliver a laser beam with light having strongly water-absorbed wavelengths to the infected nail. The diseased nail is irradiated with the laser beam, and the fluence and a duration of the laser irradiation received by the nail are adjusted such that by laser energy absorption in a surface portion of the nail a superficial heating of the nail and heat diffusion from said heated surface portion into the infected nail bed are achieved. The bottom of the nail plate in this embodiment is heated to a treatment temperature needed to inactivate the infecting organism.
