Abstract: A system includes a focus optic configured to converge an electromagnetic radiation (EMR) beam to a focal region located along an optical axis. The system also includes a detector configured to detect a signal radiation emanating from a predetermined location along the optical axis. The system additionally includes a controller configured to adjust a parameter of the EMR beam based in part on the signal radiation detected by the detector. The system also includes a window located a predetermined depth away from the focal region, between the focal region and the focus optic along the optical axis, wherein the window is configured to make contact with a surface of a tissue.

Abstract: A medical instrument includes two jaw members, at least one of which creates conditions of frustrated total internal reflection at a tissue-contacting surface when tissue is grasped between the two jaw members. The first jaw member may include an optical element having a tissue-contacting surface. The medical instrument also includes a light source that provides a light beam for sealing tissue. The light source is positioned so that the light beam is totally internally reflected from an interface between the tissue-contacting surface and air when tissue is not grasped by the jaw members. When tissue is grasped by the jaw members, at least a portion of the light beam is transmitted through that portion of the tissue-contacting surface that is in contact with the tissue. The light source may be movably coupled to a jaw member to scan the light beam and/or to change the incident angle based on optical properties of the tissue.

Abstract: A cooling element includes a frame including one or more datums. The cooling element also includes a first window including a first proximal surface and a first distal surface. The first window is sealed to the frame. The cooling element further includes a second window sealed to the frame. The second window includes a second proximal surface and a second distal surface. The second window is configured to contact a target tissue or a tissue adjacent to the target tissue via the second distal surface. The cooing element also includes a coolant chamber located between the first distal surface of the first window and the second proximal surface of the second window and configured to receive a coolant. The first window, the second window and the coolant chamber are configured to receive and electromagnetic radiation (EMR), and transmit a portion of the received EMR to the target tissue.

Abstract: A treatment apparatus for treating a skin lesion on skin of a patient, the apparatus comprising a source of electromagnetic radiation (16), a guide (6, 20) to guide the electromagnetic radiation to the skin lesion (25) and a control apparatus (1), the control apparatus (1) being arranged so as to cause the source (16) and the guide (6, 20) to: provide an initial burst of electromagnetic radiation to the skin lesion (25) to heat it to a first temperature selected by the control apparatus (1); cease providing electromagnetic radiation to the skin lesion (25) for a period; and provide a further burst of electromagnetic radiation to the skin lesion (25) so as to maintain the temperature of the skin lesion within a temperature range selected by the control apparatus (1). The apparatus may comprise a temperature sensor (24) which detects the temperature of the patient’s skin, typically the skin lesion.

Abstract: The present application discloses a medical instrument for tissue ablation by a minimally invasive surgical procedure, including a hollow outer shaft, an inner shaft which can be guided longitudinally displaceably in the hollow outer shaft, and a control portion at a proximal end of the medical instrument, in order to position the hollow outer shaft. An attachment for mechanical ablation of tissue is arranged at a distal end of the inner shaft, wherein the attachment does not protrude beyond an inner profile formed by the inner faces of the outer shaft, and wherein at any rate the distal end of the attachment protrudes beyond the distal end of the hollow outer shaft in order to ablate tissue. The medical instrument may be combined with further medical appliances, in particular with an HF coagulation attachment or a laser coagulation attachment for tissue coagulation.

Abstract: An electro-mechanical-type handpiece is specially designed to be used with a laser Generator, particularly those that use a CO2 laser and provide a laser beam in fractional mode. The fractional mode laser beam is provided in a pattern of homogeneous points aligned in rows, columns or diagonally, and such a pattern allows internal tissue along an entire length of a vagina of a patient to be treated and a pelvic floor of the patient to be retracted, such that a urinary bladder of the patient is elevated and, owing to the change in angle thereof, slight or moderate losses of urine are resolved or improved. In addition, the device can be used to treat the inner surface of the vagina of the patient, reducing vaginal laxity caused by childbirth and age.

Abstract: A dental laser treatment system includes a treatment laser beam and a pilot (e.g., aiming/marking) laser beam sharing a collinear beam path, where the beam path is guided by a guidance system through a handpiece/main chamber assembly having a beam exit. A laser beam presence detector is removably affixed to or within the handpiece/main chamber assembly. The laser beam presence detector provides feedback to a computer which can control actuation of the treatment laser beam and the pilot laser beam, and the beam guidance system. The computer performs a search for determining the center location of the beam exit based on the feedback and controls the beam guidance system to guide the beam path approximately to the center of the beam exit, thereby providing automatic alignment of the laser beam with the beam exit or an optional hollow waveguide.

Abstract: An electrically safe treatment system for use in treating a patient includes two or more sections coupled with a joint that permits any one section to rotate relative to another coupled section. At least one of the sections includes an electrical component. An electrical contact associated with the joint is designed to maintain an electrical connection between a pair of sections throughout an angular range of motion of one of the sections relative to the other, coupled section. The electrical contact can also maintain a total resistance of a series connection including the two sections and the contact below a specified threshold. Alternatively, one or more insulator joints may be employed to meet safety requirements.
