A method for treating the surface of aluminum alloys having a relatively high copper content is provided which includes the steps of removing substantially all of the copper from the surface, contacting the surface with a first solution containing cerium, electrically charging the surface while contacting the surface in an aqueous molybdate solution, and contacting the surface with a second solution containing cerium. The copper is substantially removed from the surface in the first step either by (i) contacting the surface with an acidic chromate solution or by (ii) contacting the surface with an acidic nitrate solution while subjecting the surface to an electric potential. The corrosion-resistant surface resulting from the invention is excellent, consistent and uniform throughout the surface. Surfaces treated by the invention may often be certified for use in salt-water services.

Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to electrochemical approaches for synthesis of platinum-iridium alloys with selected platinum-iridium ratio content and subsequently predetermined mechanical properties and electrochemical impedance properties. Such can provide a simple and cost-effective process for preparing these electrodes, as compared to conventional thin film processing techniques. A three-electrode electrochemical electrodeposition system is described including an electrochemical cell with a working electrode on which the electrodeposited film is deposited, a counter electrode to complete the electrochemical circuit and a reference electrode to measure and control surface potential. Mixed layers of platinum atoms and iridium atoms can be deposited from electrolyte solution onto the working electrode surface to create an electrically conductive surface with material properties related to the composition of the as-deposited film. The mechanical properties and electrochemical properties of the film can be tuned by adjusting the electrodeposition parameters.

A process for sealing the surface coating formed by anodizing an aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate (for example, aerospace, commercial, and architectural products), the process including the steps of: (a) providing an aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate with a surface coating formed thereon by anodizing the aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate; (b) providing a sealing solution comprising a dilute solution of a rare earth metal salt selected from the group consisting of cerium salts and yttrium salts; and (c) contacting the substrate with the sealing solution for a sufficient amount of time to seal the surface coating on the substrate. Also disclosed is a chemical sealing solution for sealing the surface coating formed by anodizing an aluminum or aluminum alloy substrate, the solution being a dilute solution of a rare earth metal salt selected from the group consisting of cerium salts and yttrium salts.

A cell is provided which utilizes the electrochemical permeation technique to determine the hydrogen content of a metal. The working face of the cell has an opening into a cavity within the cell. A sponge for holding electrolyte fits in the cavity and an anode extends into the cavity. A contact is provided on the working face for contacting the metal being measured. When the cell is held against the metal being measured by the magnet which encloses the cell, a current caused by the oxidation of hydrogen permeating from the metal flows between the anode and the contact electrode. A circuit is provided to measure this hydrogen oxidation current and to calculate the hydrogen content based upon diffusion equations. A seal formed around the opening prevents leakage of electrolyte during the measurement and defines the area being measured. The potential between a special reference electrode positioned in the cavity and the anode is measured to determine if the anode is properly charged and to confirm that sufficient electrolyte is present in the cavity.
