    Abstract: A gating control for a switching arrangement comprising a pair of thyristors which are alternately gated into conduction by gating pulses for predetermined conduction angles. First balancing means compares the conduction angles of alternate thyristors on those pairs of successive conducting periods during which a first one of the thyristors conducts preceding a second one of the thyristors and derives a first-balance indicating signal indicative of the difference between the conduction angles compared by the first balancing means. Second balancing means compares the conduction angles of alternate thyristors on those pairs of successive conducting periods during which the second thyristor conducts preceding said first thyristor and derives a second balance-indicating signal indicative of the difference between the conduction angles compared by this second balancing means. For forcing the conduction angles of the alternate thyristors toward equality, means sensitive to the first balanceindicating signal varies the gating angles at which gating pulses are delivered to the first thyristor; and means sensitive to the second balance-indicating signal varies the gating angles at which gating pulses are delivered to the second thyristor.

    Abstract: To sense when a thyristor is conducting, voltage detecting means is connected in parallel with the thyristor for emitting an indicating signal whenever the instantaneous magnitude of voltage across the thyristor exceeds a predetermined threshold level which is higher than the voltage drop across the thyristor when conducting, and logic means is provided for producing a predetermined output signal in response to the absence of said indicating signal and, concurrently, the act of either triggering the thyristor or producing the output signal.

    Abstract: A gating control for an a-c phase-controlled, single-phase static switch comprising a pair of thyristors connected in inverse parallel relationship in a power circuit that has a variable power factor. The gating control controls the length of the non-conducting period between successive conduction periods of the switch in such a manner that the length of the nonconducting period is made approximately inversely proportional to an input control signal for the gating control, when the input control signal is between 0 and 1 per unit. A conduction-angle balancing circuit modifies the action of the gating control in such a manner that the conduction angles are forced toward a condition of equality despite a change therein produced by a change in the effective input control signal and despite the power circuit''s having a low power factor.
