Abstract: High strength graphite fiber or ribbon and a method for making them are provided involving the extrusion of a mixture of polyacetylene and an organic solvent, subjecting the extrudate to a preliminary heat treatment, and thereafter exposing the heat stabilized extrudate to temperatures up to about 3300*C while in an inert atmosphere and under tension.
