Abstract: An improved hood-type closure installation for vehicles including a closure supported on the vehicle body by a pair of hinge assemblies for movement between open and closed positions relative to an opening in the vehicle body, each hinge assembly including an intermediate support pivotally mounted on the vehicle body for movement between extended and retracted positions. The intermediate supports carry pintles to support the closure for the aforementioned movement between the open and closed positions and are normally maintained by frangible locking means in the extended positions. Forced rearward bodily shiftable movement of the closure generally in the plane thereof initiates fracture of the frangible locking means after which each intermediate support pivots from the extended to a retracted position and simultaneously forcibly constrains the rear edge of the closure to move in a path of motion toward a position below the corresponding edge of the vehicle body opening.

Abstract: A vehicle body hood latch assembly includes a blocking lever pivoted on a latch housing and biased to either a blocked position or an unblocked position by an overcenter spring. The blocking lever includes a blocking edge which, when the blocking lever is in blocked position, is engaged by a tab mounted on a release lever to prevent movement of the release lever from an unreleased position to a released position and consequent undetenting of a bolt. Movement of the blocking lever to unblocked position moves the blocking edge out of the path of the tab and allows movement of the release lever to the released position and the undetenting of the bolt. The tab slides along a return edge of the blocking lever during this movement of the release lever and moves the blocking lever back toward blocked position such that the spring moves overcenter and returns the blocking lever to blocked position substantially concomitant with the undetenting of the bolt.

Abstract: A vehicle including a hood member mounted thereon for swinging movement relative thereto about a forward axis between raised and lowered position has a striker mounted on the hood member, a retaining lever pivotally mounted on the vehicle and a frangible pin connection between the vehicle and retaining lever maintaining the latter in a fixed orientation relative to the former. In the normal lowered position of the hood member, rearward longitudinal movement thereof relative to the vehicle as during a collision initiates fracture of the frangible pin which fracture is followed by movement of the retaining lever into a position wherein it is engageable with the striker to prevent movement of the hood member toward the raised position thereof.
