Abstract: A DC electrical network comprising DC terminals operatively connectable to a converter; and DC transmission paths arranged to interconnect the DC terminals, and including a DC power transmission medium and a switching apparatus. The DC network further including: an active power electronic device connected in at the DC transmission paths, the active power electronic device; a detector configured to detect faults in the DC transmission paths; and a control unit programmed to operate the active power electronic device to vary an apparent impedance of a faulty DC transmission path to force a current flowing in the faulty DC transmission path to reduce to a target current level, and operate the switching apparatus to block current from flowing in the faulty DC transmission path when the current flowing in the faulty corresponding DC transmission path is reduced to the target current level.

Abstract: A voltage source converter (VSC) includes AC terminal(s) connected to an AC network, DC terminal(s) connected to a DC network, energy storage device(s) to selectively store and release energy, and switching element(s) connected between the AC and DC terminals. Each switching element and each energy storage device arranged so that each switching element is switchable to selectively switch each energy storage device into circuit with each DC terminal. The VSC further includes a controller to switch each switching element to switch each energy storage device into circuit to use the energy stored to inject test electrical signal(s) into the DC network in response to a fault in the DC network and when the VSC is disconnected from the AC network. The controller also monitors the test electrical response of the DC network to the injection of each test electrical signal to determine characteristic(s) and/or location of the fault.

Abstract: An assembly including a converter including first and second DC terminals connectable to the DC network and between which extends a converter limb. Each converter limb includes first and second portions separated by an AC terminal. Each portion includes a switching element for normal operation and a switching element and energy absorber for a bypass mode. The bypass mode causes current to bypass the energy absorber in the limb portion and flow through the energy absorber. The assembly also includes an AC circuit breaker which is openable to isolate the converter from the network. The electrical assembly includes a control unit that is a programmed to operate the energy absorption module within the converter in its bypass mode and following a DC fault to initiate opening of the AC circuit breaker then to operate in absorption mode to remove DC fault current within an augmented current path.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an electronic valve apparatus for a high voltage direct current, HVDC, power transmission system. The electronic valve apparatus comprises a first device chain (301) including a plurality of first devices (302, 303) connected in series between an input node (330) and an output node (332) of the electronic valve apparatus (300, 400, 500). Each of the plurality of first devices (302, 303) has an asymmetric transfer function configured substantially to block current flow through the device in a first direction, and the plurality of first devices (302, 303) are connected such that they all block current flow in the same direction. The electronic valve apparatus also includes a second device chain (311) including a plurality of second devices (312, 313) connected in series between the input node (330) and the output node (332). Each of the plurality of second devices (312, 313) has an asymmetric transfer function configured substantially to block current flow through the device in a first direction, and the plurality of second devices (312, 313) are connected such that they all block current flow in the same direction. The second device chain (311) is connected in parallel with the first device chain (301).

Abstract: There is provided an electrical assembly for use in an electrical system. The electrical assembly comprises a DC path. The DC path includes: a DC power transmission medium; and a current commutation device, the current commutation device including a switching element and an energy absorbing element, the switching element arranged to permit a current flowing, in use, through the DC path to flow through the switching element and at the same time bypass the energy absorbing element, wherein the electrical assembly further includes a control unit programmed to selectively control the switching of the switching element to commutate the current directly from the switching element to the energy absorbing element in order to increase the resultant voltage drop caused by the flow of direct current through the DC path in which the current commutation device is connected and thereby oppose the flow of the current through the DC path.
