Abstract: A method for precharging half bridge modules and full bridge modules of a modular multilevel converter includes providing the modular multilevel converter with at least one phase module branch with half bridge modules and full bridge modules connected electrically in a series circuit, and each of the half bridge modules and full bridge modules having at least first and second module connections, two electronic switching elements and an electrical energy store. In a first charging phase after connecting the multilevel converter to an energy supply network with the electronic switching elements of the half bridge modules and the full bridge modules not actuated, the energy stores of the half bridge modules and the full bridge modules are charged in an uncontrolled manner. In a second charging phase, the electronic switching elements of at least some full bridge modules are actuated such that the half bridge modules are charged further.

Abstract: A thermal management system for an automotive inverter includes an active discharge circuit in thermal communication with a DC link capacitor, a thermal interface material positioned between the active discharge circuit and the DC link capacitor such that heat generated from the active discharge circuit is transferred to the DC link capacitor, and a coolant channel for a cooling fluid extending between the DC link capacitor and a base plate of the automotive inverter, wherein the heat generated from the active discharge circuit of the automotive inverter is transferred from the DC link capacitor to dissipate the heat. A method to thermally manage heat dissipated from automotive inverter is also provided.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for multi-level inverters. A hybrid binary cascaded multilevel inverter (BCMLI) is discussed that includes a plurality of H-bridge cells connected in a cascaded formation. DC input voltages of some of the H-bridge cells are provided by DC voltage sources. But inputs of other H-bridge cells coupled with capacitors instead. The H-bridge cells are operated to provide an AC output voltage at the output terminals of the inverter. One or more floating capacitor voltage controllers are used to vary one or more switching instances of the H-bridge cells such that a desirable level or charge is maintained across the one or more capacitors coupled with the input terminals of the H-bridge cells.

Abstract: The invention proposed a space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) method for any level cascaded H-bridge inverter. The multilevel space vector diagram is re-divided, and the coordinates of the nearest three vectors (NTVs) are directly obtained by judging the position of the reference vector. The duty cycles of the NTVs is calculated through additional vector which is equivalent to the reference vector. Then, the switching states are obtained by zero-sequence component and coordinate transformation, and the desired reference vector is synthesized for the SVPWM modulation. The invention realizes multilevel modulation in Cartesian coordinates without any iterative calculation, and the calculation is independent of the level number. Furthermore, the locating of the reference vector and the calculation of the duty cycles are simplified, and the calculation complexity is reduced.
