    Abstract: Adaptive seatbelt systems and methods are provided for adjusting the position of a seatbelt relative to an occupant. An adaptive seatbelt system for a vehicle includes a seat. A belt is configured to restrain an occupant in the seat. An anchor point along the belt is provided at an elevated position. An actuator raises or lowers the anchor point relative to the seat. A controller receives an input signal containing occupant identifying information and biometric data corresponding to occupant identification data. A processor compares the occupant identifying information to occupant identification data to verify an occupant's identity. The processor may determine an optimal comfort height or an optimal restraint height for the third anchor point based on the biometric data. The actuator adjusts the anchor point to the optimal comfort height or to the optimal restraint height in response to signals from the processor.

    Abstract: A system and method for optimizing various vehicle safety systems, such as airbags and seat belt load tensioning limiters, for a particular occupant of a vehicle seat, such as the vehicle driver or passenger, based on the weight of the occupant and the fore-aft position of the seat. The method senses the mass of the occupant and the position of the seat and classifies the combination of the mass and position. The method then determines the optimized setting of the safety systems for that combination classification, and automatically sets the safety systems to that setting. The method can also determine the optimized setting of the safety systems based on whether the occupant is wearing a seat belt.

    Abstract: An accident severity estimation system for estimating the severity of an accident for a vehicle includes one or more microphones that capture a plurality of audio-based inputs indicative of verbal and non-verbal sounds emitted by one or more occupants of the vehicle. The accident severity estimation system also includes a vision system that captures a plurality of vision-based inputs representing image data indicative of the occupants, a motion-based input system that collects a plurality of motion-based inputs indicative of the motion of the vehicle during the accident, a thermal incident system that collects a plurality of thermal inputs indicative of thermal events within the vehicle, a propulsion system that provides a status-based input of the propulsion system of the vehicle, and one or more controllers.

    Abstract: A severity estimation system for one or more occupants located in an interior cabin of a vehicle involved in a vehicle-related incident includes one or more microphones located within the interior cabin of the vehicle that capture audio-based inputs, an occupant monitoring system (OMS) that collects scene recognition inputs indicative of a status of the occupants, a restraint system that collects a plurality of restraint-based inputs indicative of one or more restraint-based mechanisms associated with an occupant of the vehicle being activated during the vehicle-related incident, a motion-based indicator system that collect the plurality of motion-based inputs indicative of the motion of the vehicle during the vehicle-related incident, and one or more controllers. The one or more controllers fuse together the audio-based indicator, the OMS indicator, the restraint-based indicator, and the motion-based indicator to determine an incident severity indicator corresponding to the one or more occupants.

    Abstract: An inflatable cushion for a side-impact airbag includes first and second fabric panels forming an expandable chamber. The first fabric panel forms a tubular shape upon inflation and includes a top end and a bottom end having continuous outer perimeters and an inflator aperture. The second fabric panel joined to the top end of the first fabric panel and having a circumference equal to a circumference of the continuous outer perimeter of the top end of the first fabric panel and including a vent aperture. The second fabric panel is orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the first fabric panel when the inflatable cushion is inflated. The bottom end of the first fabric panel is closed. The longitudinal axis of the tubular-shaped first fabric panel is parallel to a longitudinal axis of a vehicle seat back when the inflatable cushion is deployed.
