    Abstract: An electrolyte is provided. The electrolyte includes a solvent containing propylene carbonate (PC); a lithium salt dissolved in the solvent; a first additive dissolved in the solvent, the first additive being configured to stabilize an anode solid electrolyte interphase; a second additive dissolved in the solvent, the second additive being configured to stabilize at least one of an anode, a cathode, or the lithium salt; and a third additive dissolved in the solvent, the third additive being configured to stabilize at least one of an anode, a cathode, or the lithium salt. The first, second, and third additives are chemically distinct. Electrochemical cells including the electrolyte are also provided.

    Abstract: A lithium ion battery is provided that includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. One or more of the separator, positive electrode, and negative electrode includes a transition metal compound capable of catalyzing any gaseous reactants formed in the lithium ion battery to form a liquid. The transition metal compound may include ruthenium (Ru). In certain variations, the lithium ion battery includes an electrolyte that is a conductive medium for lithium ions to move between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. The electrolyte comprises a transition metal compound capable of catalyzing a reaction of any gaseous reactants to form a liquid.

    Abstract: A modified separator for a high-energy lithium metal-based electrochemical cell and methods of formation relating thereto are provided. The modified separator includes a substrate including a dopant and a coating layer disposed on the doped substrate. The dopant and compound comprising the coating layer are independently selected from the group consisting of: aluminum oxide (Al2O3), titanium dioxide (TiO2), zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), iron oxide (Fe2O3), tin oxide (SnO), silicon oxide (SiO2), tantalum oxide (Ta2O5), lanthanum oxide (La2O3), hydrofluoroolefin (HfO), cerium oxide (CeO2), and combinations thereof.
