Abstract: A system for detecting bulging or rupturing of a vent cap includes a battery cell including a rigid enclosure, first and second terminals, and a vent cap. A first sensor is arranged adjacent to the vent cap and configured to sense a parameter affected by rupturing of the vent cap. A controller is configured to compare the parameter to a predetermined parameter and to detect rupturing of the vent cap in response to the comparison.

Abstract: A battery cell chemistry test fixture includes a housing including a battery cell chamber. A first electric terminal is electrically connectable to a battery cell in the battery cell chamber. A second electric terminal is electrically connectable to the battery cell in the battery cell chamber. A plurality of sensor connectors is mounted to the housing. The plurality of sensor connectors include at least a gas sampling connector, a pressure sensor connector, and a valve connector, each of the gas sampling connector, the pressure sensor connector, and the valve connector being fluidically connected with the battery cell chamber.

Abstract: A cathode active particles for use in a cathode of a lithium ion battery comprising a core includes a lithium-manganese-rich oxide and a coating on the core, wherein the coating includes a lithium manganese spinel. The cathode active particle can be made by preparing a dispersion of particles comprising a lithium-manganese-rich metal oxide in an aqueous solution of a salt of a transition metal oxide. The dispersion is mixed, and heated to a temperature in a range of 60 to 125° C. The solids are separated from the dispersion, and calcined. The cathode active particles can be used in cathode and in a battery comprising such cathode.
