They are suitable for selectively controlling weeds in crops of useful plants, especially in cereals and rice.

The invention relates to novel oxime derivatives of diphenyl ethers of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or halogen or a nitro or cyano group and Q is a straight-chain or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylene bridge.These compounds have good selective herbicidal action, they inhibit plant growth, and can be employed as safeners for protecting cultivated plants from the phytotoxic action of certain herbicides.

The invention is concerned with new herbicidally active 4-phenoxy-.alpha.-phenoxy-alkanecarboxylic acid derivatives, especially propionic acid esters of the type ##STR1## bearing in the first phenoxy radical a nitro group besides another substituent R.sub.1 which is preferably a halogen atom, the CF.sub.3 group is lower alkyl, alkoxy or alkoxycarbonyl group. The invention is further concerned with herbicidal compositions containing such new derivatives and with methods for the selective control of grass-like weeds in crops of dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous cultivated plants such as cereals.

3-Phenoxy-.alpha.-phenoxy-alkancarboxylic acid derivatives of the formula ##STR1## are disclosed as possessing a surprising selective herbicidal activity. In the formula, Hal is a halogen atom, m is an integer 1, 2 or 3, Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or the cyano group, Z is a halogen atom or the cyano group, R.sub.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, and R is an acid function. Methods are disclosed for combatting weeds in mono- and dicotyledonous cultures such as cereals, corn, rice, soya and cotton, which comprise applying to the locus to be protected from weeds a dosage of from 0.1 to 10.0 kilograms per hectare of the above compounds.

The m-Cyanoalkoxy-phenylureas of the formula I ##STR1## wherein X is hydrogen or halogen, Y--O is a preferably branched-chain cyanoalkoxy group, and --NR.sub.1 R.sub.2 is a primary, secondary or heterocyclic amino group, exhibit surprisingly good herbicidal activity against mono- and dicotyledonous plants, with a selective action in crops of maize, cereals, cotton and soya bean, and in the case of some of these compounds also in rape crops.
