A polyamide co-polymer polyol made by the reaction of a dicarboxylic acid diester with a diamine in the presence of a polyether polyol is described. The nylon formed should be present in the polyol in an amount of from 1 to 30 wt. %. The polyether polyol may have a molecular weight of about 2,000 to 8,000. This polyamide co-polymer polyol may be used in the manufacture of elastomers and flexible polyurethane foams which are characterized by good load bearing properties.

Mixtures of aromatic polyols containing amide and ester functionalities suitable for use in rigid foams prepared by reacting a phthalic acid residue with an amino alcohol and subsequent alkoxylation are described. These novel polyols may be blended with conventional polyols to yield rigid foams with better flammability resistance as compared with foams made from conventional polyols alone.

The modified polyols of 2000 to 7000 molecular weight produce flexible polyurethane foams that have higher load bearing properties than foams made with nonmodified polyols. The ability of a modified polyol to make a higher load bearing foam is related to the position in the polyol chain the epoxy resin is added.

A process for preparing a polyurea reaction injection molded (RIM) elastomer is described. A hindered polyetherpolyamine is first obtained by reacting a polyol having two or more hydroxyl groups with an effective amount of long chain alkyl epoxide to give an at least partially hindered intermediate having hydroxyl terminations; and then aminating at least one of the hydroxyl terminations on the intermediate to primary amine groups to give an at least partially hindered polyetherpolyamine. The hindered polyetherpolyamine is then reacted with a polyisocyanate in the optional presence of a catalyst to give a polyurea RIM elastomer. The long chain alkyl group provides steric hindrance to the primary aliphatic amine group, which slows down the reactivity of the amine. The slower reactivity of the amine group is useful in RIM and RRIM compositions since it allows for longer shot or flow times, which in turn permit larger parts to be made from existing equipment.

N-butylmorpholine and N,N'-dimethylpiperazine may be used together as a catalyst system in an activator solution to give finer, more uniform cells to polyester-based polyurethane foams if a solvent is employed. It was surprisingly discovered that the components must be used together as a catalyst-solvent system to avoid the disadvantages observed when one of the components is changed or left out. For example, if the solvent were not present in the activator solution in proportions of at least 1 wt. %, the activator solution would not be homogeneous.
