Abstract: The present disclosure provides a metal structure, or antenna radiator, for an accessory that is configured to function as both an antenna and an input control. The device may be a wearable device with a first surface shaped to be in contact with the human body and a second surface shaped to be exposed when the device is being worn. The antenna radiator may be located internally within the housing of the device and coupled to a printed circuit board (“PCB”). The PCB may be located between the antenna radiator and the surface of the housing such that the PCB may shield the antenna radiator from antenna loss due to the human body. An electric field may extend between the PCB and the antenna radiator. The fringe electric field may improve cross-head and cross-body connectivity between the accessory and another device.

Abstract: Techniques and apparatuses are described that implement a smart device-based radar system capable of detecting human vital signs using a compact circularly-polarized antenna. A radar system includes at least one compact circularly-polarized antenna with a patch antenna and a quadrature hybrid coupler. The quadrature hybrid coupler is on a separate plane that is above or below the patch antenna. By vertically stacking the patch antenna with the quadrature hybrid coupler, lateral dimensions of the radar system can be reduced relative to other antenna configurations or designs. The quadrature hybrid coupler can also have a ring-shape design to improve isolation and polarization purity of the compact circularly-polarized antenna relative to a rectangular design. The compact circularly-polarized antenna enables a radar system operating at frequencies between approximately 1 gigahertz (GHz) and 24 GHz to be implemented within a variety of small smart devices.

Abstract: Techniques and mechanisms to provide wireless communication with a body-mountable device comprising a single-loop antenna. In an embodiment, distal ends of the single-loop antenna are disposed on opposite sides of a slit structure, wherein the single-loop antenna extends around a controller configured to provide any of multiple modes of high-frequency communication with the single-loop antenna. Different operational modes each provide for operation of the single-loop antenna with both a proximity-coupled feed structure and a first contact at or near a distal end of the single-loop antenna. In another embodiment, the single-loop antenna forms a hole or a recess structure which is aligned with a sensor or an input/output (I/O) mechanism of the body-mountable device.

Abstract: Role switch between wirelessly paired master/slave devices may be performed without perceived glitches in audio. The devices negotiate an anchor point, such as a point in time or a point in relation to other events, for performing the role switch. To prepare for the role switch prior to the anchor point, the devices communicate a variety of information, such as information for communicating with the host device after the role switch and information for bit processing after the role switch. The slave device may use such information to serve in the master role, without the host knowing that a role switch occurred.
