摘要： Various mechanisms, and a method of operating them, are provided for use in a surgical instrument. A shaft and an engaged lost motion operating knob are provided for rotation relative to a handle portion. A latch system prevents rotation of the shaft unless the shaft is rotated by means of the knob. A cartridge is provided for rotation at the distal end of the shaft. Engaging structures are provided for preventing rotation of the cartridge relative to the shaft when axial forces are applied to the cartridge. A loading tool is provided for engaging the cartridge to install the cartridge on the instrument. The cartridge includes a washer for engaging a carrier on which the cartridge is mounted so as to prevent rotation of the washer. The washer is adapted to engage a fastener advancing member in a first angular orientation and is disengaged when the cartridge is rotated to establish a second relative angular orientation. In the first angular orientation, the fastener advancing member is restrained against longitudinal movement to assist in installation of the cartridge onto the instrument. The distal end of the instrument can be articulated, and a helical gear operator is provided for effecting the articulation. The helical gear pitch decreases in a direction such that the mechanical advantage is increased as the articulation angle increases.

摘要： Various mechanisms, and a method of operating them, are provided for use in a surgical instrument. A shaft and an engaged lost motion operating knob are provided for rotation relative to a handle portion. In the first angular orientation, the fastener advancing member is restrained against longitudinal movement to assist in installation of the cartridge onto the instrument. The distal end of the instrument can be articulated, and a helical gear operator is provided for effecting the articulation. The helical gear pitch decreases in a direction such that the mechanical advantage is increased as the articulation angle increases. A trigger actuating system includes a trigger lever with a cam channel, a pin in the cam channel, and a link connected at one end to the pin and at the other end to a reciprocatable driver. A frame is provided with a guide channel for guiding an end of the pin. The trigger lever is pivotally mounted to the frame and biased to a normally unactuated position.

摘要： A surgical biopsy instrument for the extraction of at least one tissue sample from a body is described herein. The surgical biopsy instrument has a vacuum source and an outer elongated hollow piercing needle for the penetration of the body. The needle has a proximal end and a distal piercing tip opposite the proximal end. The needle also includes a needle passageway extending between the proximal end and the tip. The needle has a tissue receiving port adjacent to the piercing tip and the tissue receiving port communicates with the needle passageway for reception of the tissue sample. A cutter is moveably disposed relative with the needle. The cutter has a distal cutting blade on the distal end of the cutter. The cutting blade is moveable across the tissue receiving port of the needle to cut the tissue sample. A tissue extractor is connected to the vacuum source and the extractor is moveably disposed relative to the needle. The tissue extractor has a tissue receptacle and an extractor channel extending therethrough. The tissue receptacle communicates with the extractor channel and the tissue receptacle is alignable with the tissue receiving port of the piercing needle for the reception of the tissue sample upon an application of a vacuum from the vacuum source. The tissue extractor is removable from the needle of the surgical biopsy instrument for the extraction of the tissue sample from the body.

摘要： A stapler mechanism is described which contains a stapling assembly, and anvil assembly, firing means and knife means. These means are activated by a firing trigger. The anvil assembly is closed upon the stapling assembly by means of a closure trigger. The firing trigger is inoperable until the closure trigger has been activated. Another mechanism in the stapler is capable of locking the closure trigger after use so it does not spring open inadvertently before use of the firing trigger. Additionally, the stapler mechanism allows forward motion of both triggers and also is capable of allowing reverse motion of the closure trigger to open the mechanism.

The instrument has a piercing needle that is initially inserted into the body. The needle has a piercing tip and a plurality of tissue receiving ports, for the reception of tissue samples, circumferentially arranged around the needle adjacent to the piercing tip. A first tissue sample is sampled at the first tissue receiving port and is removed from the instrument. A second tissue sample is sampled at a second tissue receiving port without moving the needle. The second tissue sample is removed from the body in the same manner as the first.

摘要： A surgical biopsy instrument for the extraction of at least one tissue sample from a body is described. The surgical biopsy instrument has a vacuum source and an outer elongated hollow piercing needle for the penetration of the body. The needle is rotatably fixed about the longitudinal axis and has a proximal end and a distal piercing tip opposite the proximal end. The needle also includes a needle passageway extending between the proximal end and the tip. A cutter is moveably disposed relative to the needle. The cutter has a distal cutting blade on the distal end of the cutter. The cutting blade is moveable across the tissue receiving ports of the needle to cut the tissue sample. A tissue extractor is connected to the vacuum source and the extractor is moveably disposed relative to the needle. The tissue extractor has a tissue receptacle and an extractor channel extending therethrough. The tissue receptacle communicates with the extractor channel and the tissue receptacle is alignable with at least one tissue receiving port of the piercing needle for the reception of the tissue sample upon an application of a vacuum from the vacuum source. The tissue receptacle is removable from the needle of the surgical biopsy instrument for the extraction of the tissue sample from the body.
