The method comprises electrochemically etching away all material in a region of the surface, except for portions of the region defined by a land pattern on an etching cathode. The step of removing forms a continuous recessed region comprising grooves formed between the portions of the region defined by the land pattern, and a relief cut region circumscribing the workpiece.

A process for the production of mask frames for cathode ray tubes and is particularly useful in the production of color picture tubes for TV sets and monitors. The production of the frames is performed by welding at least two starting components, followed by forming, wherein planar starting components are positioned and fixed in positions in such way that edges of the starting components to be welded are in contact, followed by welding the starting components with at least one laser beam and, subsequently, processing the frame by pressing and/or punching. Preferably the laser beam is generated using a CO.sub.2 gas laser or a Nd:YAG solid-state laser. Preferably, the power of the laser beam is modulated to produce a weld that increases in depth from the beginning of the weld and decreases in depth at the end of the weld.

The stator windings are connected in series or parallel to form five connecting points. A control switches five switches having an armature connected to a connecting point between a positive and negative potential so as simultaneously to energize the windings as required. The control then shifts the short-circuited condition to other windings in cyclical sequence while energizing the remaining four windings at any time. In one embodiment, a ballizing unit having a distal end removably coupled to a ballizing member moves the ballizing member from a first position within the bore hole to a second position. A metrology unit having a distal end removably coupled to the ballizing member moves the ballizing member from the second position back to the first position. A sensor detects a force exerted on the ballizing member by the workpiece at a third position, which is located between the first and second positions.

A stepping motor of the homopolar design with a step angle of 3.6.degree. and having a generally cubic form is disclosed. The motor includes a generally square, single-section laminated stator which has only four stator poles extending radially inwardly from the middle regions of the straight sides, and a concentric rotor secured to a shaft journaled in a pair of bearing bells fixed to the stator at the opposite faces thereof and having the same generally square configuration. The rotor includes a disc-shaped permanent magnet of high remanent energy density (B.times.H).sub.max .gtoreq.10.times.10.sup.6 GOe, and a pair of annular steel rotor elements provided at the working air gap with identical numbers Z.sub.r of rotor teeth of pitch .tau..sub.r =360.degree./Z.sub.r. Each stator pole is provided at the working air gap with four or five stator pole teeth of pitch .tau..sub.s =360.degree./Z.sub.s, where Z.sub.s is the theoretically maximum available number of stator pole teeth and must be evenly divisible by 4, and Z.sub.s =Z.sub.r -1.+-.k where k is an even integer and 0.ltoreq.k.ltoreq.6. The present invention replaces the current spindle motor ball bearing system of a hard disc drive by a system comprising three separate elements, including a self-pressurizing journal bearing for establishing radial stiffness which comprises a rotating shaft and sleeve with air or other fluid therebetween. A chevron or herringbone pattern is established on the sleeve or shaft to establish a self-pressurizing hydrodynamic bearing which maintains the stability of the system while providing for very simple manufacturing of the system. Additionally, a thrust bearing is defined based on the air pressure build-up between the housing for the disc stack and the disc stack itself. The term "integrated air-bearing" is used to name this thrust bearing because it is built up with components such as discs and housing which exist in any typical hard disc assembly. The integrated air-bearing may be sufficiently established by building up the bottom surface of the housing or the base of the housing to within a very close distance of the lower surface of the disc; preferably, both the top surface of the top disc and bottom surface of the bottom disc are located close to pads, or other configurations are built up to define a narrow gap between the top and bottom surfaces of the disc stack and the housing. Third, an axial elastic thrust bearing defines the axial position of the disc stack at rests and avoiding contact between the surfaces forming the integrated air-bearing (in other terms, disc and housing). This elastic thrust bearing comprises a ball fixed to the shaft that rest against an elastic shield fixed to the end sleeve of the journal bearing or the base of the disc drive. This bearing defines the axial position of the disc stack.
