MERCURY PRESENT IN WASTE WATERS FROM INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES, SUCH AS THE ELECTROLYSIS OF ALKALINE-CHLORIDES USING THE AMALGAM METHOD, IS RECOVERED TO PREVENT LOSSES THEREOF AND TO PREVENT ECOLOGICAL CONTAMINATION OF WATERWAYS. RECOVERY IS ACCOMPLISHED BY CONVERTING THE MERCURY TO LOW-WATER-SOLUBILITY COMPOUNDS AND/OR TO METALLIC MERCURY BY THE USE OF PRECIPITANTS AND SUBSEQUENT SEPARATION THEREOF FROM THE WASTE WATER.

A process for the manufacture of cumene by hydrogenating alphamethylstyrene with hydrogen in the presence of an alkalinated nickel aluminum oxide carrier catalyst, the improvement comprising, carrying out the hydrogenation at temperatures of about 60*- 160*C in the presence of a catalyst where the carrier material contains kappa and/or delta aluminum oxide having an alkali content of 0.1 - 5 percent by wweight of alkali oxide, wherein (if appropriate) molded aluminum hydroxide containing alkali is dried in a known manner, then it is heated in an air stream at about 400*- 500*C and thereafter steam treated at about 700*- 800*C. The calcined catalyst is then impregnated with a nickel salt in a conventional manner, the salt subsequently being completely decomposed into nickel oxide and volatile components, the nickel content of the catalyst (computed as nickel metal) being about 5 - 12 percent by weight referred to the calcined catalyst. The impregnated catalyst is thereupon reduced in a conventional manner.

OF A CARRIER OF HIGHLY DISPERSED SILICIC ACID WHICH AFTER DRYING AT 120*C. STILL HAS A LOSS ON IGNITION OF 1-10% BY WEIGHT, 5-20% BY WEIGHT OF COPPER RELATIVE TO THE LOSS ON IGNITION, UP TO 5% BY WEIGHT OF CHROMIUM AND 0.5 TO 15% BY WEIGHT OF BARIUM IONS.

The nitrous oxides released when ethylene oxide is introduced at 30*-70*C. into aqueous nitric acid of 50-70 percent by weight of HNO3 is recirculated thereto and gaseous oxygen is introduced into the nitric acid. A post-oxidation holding of the oxidation mixture for 8-24 hours at 30*-70*C. increases the yield of oxalic acid.
