    摘要: A stable isothermal calorimeter wherein the material under study is contained in a thermally conductive reactor vessel which is surrounded by a heat transfer fluid. The material is maintained at the boiling point of the heat transfer fluid which is in turn cntrolled by controlling the pressure of the fluid's vapor space. The heat transfer fluid is vaporized by the heat released by exothermal reaction of the material under study and the vaporized fluid condensed in a condenser. The rate of liquid accumulation in the condenser is proportional to the energy release rate of the material.

    摘要: The present invention comprises a calorimeter apparatus having a very low thermal mass ratio of test cell to test sample so as to minimize heat sink effects on the test sample during a chemical reaction. The heater control algorithm of the present invention comprises a calibration stage in which the heater is tuned to the particular test conditions at hand, and a test stage in which the heater may control the sample in a ramping mode and in an adiabatic mode. Because the sample may be tested in an adiabatic mode, greatly improved sensitivity in detection of reaction onset may be achieved, and measured data is truly adiabatic and need not be adjusted for analysis. The present invention further comprises a calorimeter apparatus having a foam detector for detecting the presence of foam in the test sample.

    摘要: A chemical reactor vessel is provided with a plurality of tubes filled with a heat exchange fluid. The tubes are disposed in a heat exchange relationship with the reactor contents and are coupled via pressure sensitive rupture discs and a header to a reservoir. Upon overheating of the reactor contents, excess heat is absorbed by the heat exchange fluid which boils off at a predetermined vaporization temperature and vapor pressure to rupture the discs and thereby establish fluid communication between the tubes and a heat exchange fluid contained in the reservoir, and thereby maintaining the reactor contents at a preselected safe temperature.

    摘要: Micro-scale chemical process simulation apparatus is disclosed which is useful for design of full-scale processes and associated equipment as well as emergency relief systems. A thin-walled vessel for receiving a quantity of the material to be evaluated is supportd within and thermally insulated from the walls of a surrounding containment unit. A guard heater is provided around the vessel and temperature thermocouples and pressure transducers are strategically located to monitor the temperature conditions existing in the material in the vessel as well as the pressure within the vessel and the containment unit respectively. Fluid may be selectively introduced into or exhausted from the containment unit to maintain a required pressure balance between the interior of the vessel and that of the containment unit. The wall thickness of the pilot vessel is such that the phi factor defined by the thermal mass of the material plus the thermal mass of the vessel divided by the thermal mass of the material is not significantly greater than the same ratio of thermal masses which obtain during a full-scale chemical operation in a pressure vessel.

    摘要: A foam detector apparatus has a detector probe for detecting the presence of foam in a test sample, with the probe held above the test sample surface and indicating foaming when foam rises from the test sample surface and contacts the detector probe. The probe has a low thermal mass measuring surface for detecting contact with foam, with the measuring surface heated to a temperature above the tempering temperature of the test sample. When the liquid portion of the foam contacts the heated measuring surface, the temperature of the low thermal mass surface quickly drops to the tempering temperature of the sample, thereby indicating foam.
