Cleaning compositions containing hydroxy mixed ethers of the general formula (I) are described: R1O[CH2CHR4O]x[CH2CHR3O]yCH2CH(OH)R2 (I) wherein R1 represents an alk(en)yl radical having from 4 to 22 carbon atoms; R2 represents an alk(en)yl radical having from 2 to 22 carbon atoms; R3 represents a hydrogen or a methyl radical; R4 represents a hydrogen or a methyl radical; x is from 1 to 40; y is from 1 to 40; and x+y>=1; and wherein the alkylene units —CH2CHR3O— and —CH2CHR4O— are in randomized form, preferably in an ethylene oxide to propylene oxide ratio of from 40:1 to 40:5. Methods of preparing and using the hydroxy mixed ethers are also described.
