In order to perform a handover at a correct moment, the terminal equipment compares the measurement results of the first and the second signal, and if the second signal exceeds the first signal by a given threshold value, the terminal equipment signals a handover request to the first base station.

According to the proposed method, the frequency of power control commands transmitted on a power control channel is changed according to the traffic. When the traffic becomes slower in at least one direction due to a DTX state, a slower transfer rate, asymmetric data transfer or for any other reason, the frequency of power control commands is lowered. Both the base station and the personal station may lower the frequency of the commands which they send. An alternative to changing the frequency of power control commands is to change the energy of power control bits. The duration of power control bits must hereby be extended, if a standard bit error ration is desired. If the system is frequency-divided and/or time-divided and uses frequency control command of several bits, the length of the command word may be shortened in addition to or as an alternative to the change in frequency. The power control algorithm may be changed several times during a traffic connection.

A cellular radio system and a handover method in a cellular radio system is provided. The cellular radio system includes a subscriber terminal and a base station. In the system, the subscriber terminal maintains and continuously updates an active set of base stations. One or several base stations belonging to the active set has a connection or connection set-up facilities to the subscriber terminal. The subscriber terminal controls the downlink transmission of one or several base stations of the active set by switching the transmission of the base station on or off. This method provides a fast soft handover similar to a hard handover.

The optimized MCS and number of channelization codes at a best bit rate is communicated from a transmitter to a receiver, possibly also with power information for instance using a transport format combination indicator (TFCI). A user equipment may play the role of carrying out the optimization and signaling the result to the Node B or may instead receive the result as carried out by the Node B or RNC in response to a radio link quality measurement sent from the UE to the Node B.
