A method and an apparatus for vulcanizing an elastomer product, such as automobile tires, wherein the elastomer product is placed in a vulcanizing chamber in a mold steam at an elevated pressure is supplied to the vulcanizing chamber to heat and pressurize the elastomer product until the elastomer product reaches a prespecified temperature or for a prespecified period of time, the steam supply is stopped and a pressurizing gas, at a pressure not lower than the steam supply pressure, is supplied to the vulcanizing chamber until the end of a heating period, said steam being blown in and supplied from an upper position of the center of the vulcanizing chamber in a horizontal direction or in an inclined downward direction, said steam being blown in and supplied from a lower position of the center of the vulcanizing chamber toward an upper region of the vulcanizing chamber. The method and apparatus prevent a large temperature difference within the elastomer product and provide uniform vulcanizing product uniformity, shortening of the vulcanizing time, improvement of productivity, and reduction of energy loss.

After loading a green tire in a tire vulcanizing machine and before shaping, bead portions of the green tires are centered relative to bead rings of upper and lower metal molds and are sequentially inserted into the bead rings precisely in parallel thereto by the same extendable/retractable sectors and chucks which are movable vertically. An apparatus preferable for practicing the aforementioned method includes a plurality of such sectors for centering and holding a bead portion of the green tire, slide and linkage mechanisms for extending and retracting chucks to which the sectors are mounted, and a cylinder mechanism for vertically moving the chucks so as to insert the bead portion of the green tire centered and held by the sectors into a bead ring of a tire metal mold.

A vulcanizing apparatus having penetrating passages connected and communicated with a jacket portion of a mold member. An upper open end portion of one of the penetrating passages is connected to a steam inlet pipe while an upper open end portion of the other penetrating passage is connected to a steam outlet pipe. The connections and communications of the jacket portion with the steam inlet and outlet pipes can be simultaneously and efficiently completed in a single operation. Inner tubes are slidably disposed along the penetrating passages and pressed against the connecting surface of the mold, and appropriate pressure is applied on the seal packing member on the connecting surface independent from the clamping force of the upper mold in order to ensure reliable sealing.

An improved tire loading mechanism of a tire cooler in a tire vulcanizing machine is proposed to save time and human labor, to prevent jamming of a screw portion and to enhance economy of the machine. The tire loading mechanism is composed of a main shaft pivotably supported from a rotary table and rotationally driven by a drive source, an outer cylinder mounted to the main shaft so as to be relatively displaceable in an axial direction via screw threads and having an upper bead ring support flange at its lower end, and a housing mounted to the lower end of the main shaft via disengageably fitting claws and having a lower bead ring support flange at its upper end. A disengageable fitting rod for stopping rotation of the outer cylinder is provided on the rotary table at a position opposed to a vertical groove on the surface of the outer cylinder. An arrangement provided between the main shaft and the outer cylinder fixedly secures the outer cylinder to the main shaft upon rotational air cooling of the tire. Such arrangement essentially includes an elastic ring on the outer circumference of the main shaft which is pneumatically expanded to be pressed against the inner circumference of the outer cylinder.

The tire vulcanizing machine comprises a lower metal mold supported on a base, an upper metal mold supported from a bolster and adapted to be placed on the lower metal mold, an upper ring rotatably fitted around an outer circumferential portion of the bolster and having claws at its lower end, a lower ring supported from the base in a vertically movable manner and having claws at its upper end, first drive means for rotating the upper ring, and second drive means for vertically moving the lower ring. The claws of the upper ring and the claws of the upper ring are adapted to be engaged with or disengaged from each other as a result of rotation of the upper ring, and the upper and lower metal molds are pressurized by lowering the lower ring when the claws of the upper ring and the claws of the lower ring are engaged with each other. Preferably, either or both of the claws of the upper ring and the claws of the lower ring are formed at a plurality of levels so that the engaging position between the upper and lower rings can be adjusted depending upon a total height of the upper and lower metal molds.

According to a central mechanism of a tire vulcanizer of the present invention, in a central mechanism of a tire vulcanizer in which a lower clamp ring holding a lower end portion of a bladder is fixed detachably to a lower ring having a passage of a vulcanizing medium, key-shaped holes are bored on the lower clamp ring, springs which press clamp rods which penetrate through the lower ring downward and a fluid pressure cylinder which pushes up the clamp rods against the spring force are provided, and the clamp rods are pushed up so as to release fixing of the lower clamp ring, and the lower clamp ring is removed by rotating the lower clamp ring by a predetermined angle from a state in which the lower clamp ring and the lower ring are fixed to each other by having nuts fixed at the upper ends of the clamp rods engaged with the key holes. Accordingly, the replacement operation of the bladder is automated, thus making it possible to improve the operation rate.
