The present invention provides an activated carbon produced by a process, which includes: activating a carbonaceous material, to obtain an activated carbonaceous material; and contacting the activated carbonaceous material with an acid. Another embodiment of the present invention provides an electrode for an electric double-layer capacitor, which includes the above-described activated carbon. Another embodiment of the present invention provides a filter, which includes the above-described activated carbon. Another embodiment of the present invention provides a shaped article, which includes the above-described activated carbon. Another embodiment of the present invention provides a method for producing activated carbon, which includes activating a carbonaceous material, to obtain an activated carbonaceous material; and contacting the activated carbonaceous material with an acid, to obtain the activated carbon. The acid-processed activated carbon has a strong affinity for water, and is particularly suitable for water purification. Electrodes produced by shaping the acid-processed activated carbon have the advantage of large electrostatic capacity per the unit volume, and are particularly suitable for capacitors.

As the gelling organic polymer compound, organic polymer compounds having —COO— bonds, or preferably acrylic polymers, can be used. Specific examples thereof include polyalkyl methacrylate or polyalkyl acrylate, which are capable of forming a stereocomplex. Among these, poly(methyl methacrylate) is preferable. Polyvinylidene fluoride resins can also be preferably used. It is preferable that an electrical double layer capacitor include a pair of polarizable electrodes and a separator disposed therebetween and that at least one of the pair of polarizable electrodes be the above-described polarizable electrode having an excellent depressing effect on the gas generation.

To produce fluorescent bodies providing high brightness and high energy efficiency, a method of preparing a fluorescent body precursor is provided to enable an activator having a large ionic radius to be doped arbitrarily. The problems described above are solved by a method of preparing a fluorescent body precursor, which method is characterized by comprising applying a shock pressure of 0.1 GPa or higher to a mixture consisting essentially of a fluorescent body base, an activator and a co-activating particle-growth promoter to dope the activator into the fluorescent body base in the presence of the co-activating particle-growth promoter.
