In a method of making a high surface area carbon material, a precursor organic material is prepared. The precursor organic material is subjected to a first elevated temperature while applying a gaseous purge thereto for a first predetermined time. The precursor organic material is subjected to a second elevated temperature while not applying the gaseous purge thereto for a second predetermined time after the first predetermined time. A high surface area carbon material includes carbon and has a surface area in a range between 3029 m2/g to 3565 m2/g and a pore volume in a range between 1.66 cm3/g and 1.90 cm3/g. The high surface area carbon material may be employed in an electrode for a supercapacitor.

In an activated carbon for adsorbing a noble metal from an aqueous solution containing the noble metal, the difference (absolute value) between a zeta-potential in a 10 mmol/L aqueous solution of sodium tetraborate and a zeta-potential in a 0.01 mmol/L aqueous solution of sodium tetraborate is adjusted to not more than 18 mV and the pore volume of pores with a pore radius of not more than 1 nm is adjusted to 150 to 500 mm3/g. The activated carbon of the present invention may have a carbohydrate solution decolorizing performance of not less than 30%. The aqueous solution containing the noble metal may be a plating wastewater. According to the present invention, a noble metal can efficiently be adsorbed (or recovered) from a solution containing the noble metal.

A process for the hydroprocessing of heavy oils and/or oil residues, the process comprising the steps of contacting a non-metallised carbonaceous material with an acid to form a non-metallised carbonaceous additive; and contacting the heavy oils and/or oil residues with the non-metallised carbonaceous additive in the presence of a hydrogen-containing gas at a temperature of from 250° C. to 600° C.

A process for making a modified, mesoporous activated carbon material from waste oil fly ash. The process involves a physicochemical treatment of a raw waste oil fly ash sample, where the sample is initially refluxed in an acid solution, then activated at about 1000° C. and in the presence of carbon dioxide. The activated carbon may be further functionalized with carboxylic and/or amine groups by refluxing the activated carbon in a second acid solution and/or an ammonia solution. The activated carbon, as prepared, has a BET surface area of 30-400 m2/g, a total pore volume of 0.25-0.50 cm3/g and an average pore size of 40-100 Å. A method for removing hydrogen sulfide from natural gas with the modified activated carbon is also provided.

The invention is directed in a first aspect to a sulfur-carbon composite material comprising: (i) a bimodal porous carbon component containing therein a first mode of pores which are mesopores, and a second mode of pores which are micropores; and (ii) elemental sulfur contained in at least a portion of said micropores. The invention is also directed to the aforesaid sulfur-carbon composite as a layer on a current collector material; a lithium ion battery containing the sulfur-carbon composite in a cathode therein; as well as a method for preparing the sulfur-composite material.

A method produces activated carbon, suitable in particular for use in double-layer condensers. The method includes a) producing a mixture of a preferably pulverulent carbon material, a base and a hydrophilic polymer chemically inert to the base, b) pressing the mixture produced in step a) to form a pressing and c) activating the pressed body produced in step b).
摘要:
A method in which a parent hydrocarbon-rich material is processed so as to produce both a carbon-rich solid material that has a higher carbon to hydrogen ratio than that of the parent material and a carbon-deficient combustible gas that has a lower carbon to hydrogen ratio than the parent material. In the process, the material is activated by exposing it to a hot gas stream having elevated levels of one or both of carbon dioxide and water vapor. The combustible gas is combusted to produce heat. At least about 80% of the heat is used in one ore more endothermic steps that include drying coal or biomass.

The present invention relates in general to a process for removing mercury from a mercury-containing flue gas using dregs from a Kraft pulp mill green liquor clarifier. The dregs are washed with water to produce a particulate carbon slurry which is activated with hydrobromic acid and injected into a mercury-containing flue gas to oxidize and adsorb the mercury at temperatures less than about 900° F. A slurry of sodium hydroxide and calcium carbonate, optionally also obtained from Kraft mill waste, is injected into the hot flue gas to absorb and remove CO2, SO2, and SO3.
