A fuel pump apparatus disposed within a fuel tank which may be employed in automotive vehicles is disclosed. The fuel pump apparatus includes a fuel pump, a filter, and a conductive member. The fuel pump is disposed within a conductive pump housing. The filter includes a filter element and a conductive filter casing. The filter element removes particles contained in fuel which is discharged from the fuel pump and returned to the fuel tank. The conductive member electrically connects between the pump housing and the filter casing for dissipating electrostatic charges generated by the friction between the filter element and the fuel passing through the filter element.

The filter apparatus is composed of a filter housing made of non-conductive material, a filter element made of conductive material contained in the filter housing, and a conductive plug with a sealing element. The filter housing has a bore and the conductive plug is inserted into the bore of the filter housing so that the clearance between the conductive plug and the filter housing is hermetically sealed by the sealing element. The conductive plug is connected in circuit to the filter element in a manner that a part of the plug is exposed out of the filter housing and an earth wire attached to the exposed portion of the plug. The static electricity generated in the filter apparatus is released via a conductive path extending from the filter element through the plug to the earth wire so that the electrostatic discharge may be prevented. The conductive plug is made of material having 107 to 1011 &OHgr;·cm resistivity. Such a value of resistivity serves to assure not only an adequate conductivity for releasing the static electricity but also an adequate resistance for preventing the electrostatic discharge from the conductive plug, if the earth wire becomes off or its connection is forgotten.

Resin having a susceptibility to electrostatic charge which is opposite in polarity to the susceptibility to electrostatic charge of a filter sheet or member forming a filter element is impregnated into the filter member. For example, when the filter member is composed of polyester of 50-70 weight percentage and glass fiber of 5-25 weight percentage as well as pulp of 15-35 weight percentage, resin composed of phenol resin of 5-20 weight percentage and melamine resin of 80-95 weight percentage is impregnated into the filter member so that the susceptibility to electrostatic charge of the filter member can be neutralized. Thus, static electricity generated by friction between the filter element and fuel flowing therethrough can be controlled.

The jet pump includes a welded portion adapted to being welded to an outer wall surface of a bottom portion of the sub-tank. A swirl portion defines therein a swirl chamber. A jet nozzle generates negative pressure by jetting swirl-flowing fuel passing through the swirl chamber so as to draw fuel from the fuel tank into the sub-tank. A pressure-receiving portion defines a clearance with respect to the swirl portion. The pressure-receiving portion extends from the welded portion in a direction to distant from the sub-tank. The pressure-receiving portion is applied with force toward the welded portion when the welded portion is welded to the sub-tank.
