The crosslinkable system comprises (a) product Q formed from an aromatic ethylenically unsaturated moiety and a first reactive ethylenically unsaturated moiety, and (b) a second reactive ethylenically unsaturated moiety at least partially reacted with the first reactive ethylenically unsaturated moiety.
Abstract:
A method for making a polyester resin comprises reacting a first polyfunctional alcohol or polyfunctional thiol and a carbonate in the presence of a catalyst to form an alkoxylated intermediate. The catalyst comprises: (1) a metal, a salt of a metal, or mixtures thereof and (2) a quaternary ammonium salt, a tertiary amine, an imidazole, or mixtures thereof. The alkoxylated intermediate is then reacted with a polyfunctional organic acid or anhydride thereof to form the polyester resin.
Abstract:
Methods of making unsaturated polyester compositions are provided and include reacting: (i) plant and animal oil triglycerides, an alkyl ester of a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid or mixtures thereof; (ii) a difunctional, or polyfunctional glycol or mixtures thereof; (iii) a difunctional or polyfunctional acid, their anhydrides or alkyl esters and mixtures thereof; (iv) a strained cycloolefin; (v) a component(s) that function as a compound capable of initiating polymerization at high temperature and which is stable at room temperature; and (vi) low profile additives, fillers and reinforcements.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a process for forming vinyl-containing compounds including the steps of: a) reacting in a nitrogen atmosphere a dicarboxylic acid and/or anhydride and a functional mono or polyfunctional alcohol to provide a hydroxyl-containing polyester; b) reacting the hydroxyl-containing polyester with a vinyl-containing organic acid in the presence of an esterification catalyst, a polymerization inhibitor and an azeotropic agent; and c) reacting the vinyl functional esterified intermediate, residual esterification catalyst and residual vinyl-containing organic acid with an epoxy to provide the vinyl-containing compound.
Abstract:
A laminating resin composition is disclosed which comprises an unsaturated polyester resin, a vinyl ester resin, a polyfunctional acrylate, and up to about 15 percent by weight of a vinyl monomer. Preferably, the vinyl ester resin has a molecular weight ranging from about 450 to 1500.
Abstract:
Saturated and ethylenically unsaturated compounds containing carboxylic, amino or alcohol groups are reacted under mild conditions and in short process times with polycarbodiimides containing free isocyanate units to provide polymers with excellent properties. The unsaturated groups bonded to the polymers are particularly important because these groups provide reactive centers that can be crosslinked, either thermally or in the presence of catalysts that initiate polymerization or by radiation. The polymers can also be crosslinked either alone or by copolymerization with various unsaturated monomers. The resulting crosslinked or cured resins provide excellent properties such as hardness, high elongation, excellent toughness, high heat distortion temperatures and good corrosion resistance.
Abstract:
Unsaturated polyester compositions are disclosed that are obtainable by reacting: (i) plant and animal oil triglycerides, an alkyl ester of a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid or mixtures thereof; (ii) a difunctional, or polyfunctional glycol or mixtures thereof; (iii) a difunctional or polyfunctional acid, their anhydrides or alkyl esters and mixtures thereof; (iv) a strained cycloolefin; (v) a component(s) that function as a compound capable of initiating polymerization at high temperature and which is stable at room temperature; and (vi) low profile additives, fillers and reinforcements. Also disclosed are methods for the preparation of the polyesters and the use of the polyesters in closed and open mold compositions such as sheet molding compounding (SMC), bulk molding compounding (BMC), resin transfer molding (RTM), pultrusion, infusion, filament winding, and spray up.

Abstract:
A method of lining a surface of a substrate comprises providing a reactive mixture which comprises (1) a resin containing active hydrogens; (2) a polycarbodiimide; and (3) an organic diluent; reacting the resin containing active hydrogens and the polycarbodiimide to chemically bind the resin and the polycarbodiimide; applying the chemically bound resin and polycarbodiimide to the surface of the substrate; and curing the chemically bound resin and polycarbodiimide in the presence of an initiator to form a cured resin material which lines the surface of the substrate.
Abstract:
A process for the production of hydroxyalkylated phenolic or hydroxyalkylated thiophenolic compounds is disclosed. The process comprises providing a phenolic or thiophenolic compound, a cyclic organic carbonate compound, and a catalyst selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal, an alcohol-derived salt of the alkali metal, and mixtures thereof; and reacting the phenolic compound and the cyclic organic carbonate compound in the presence of the catalyst to form the hydroxyalkylated phenolic or hydroxyalkylated thiophenolic compound. Preferably, the alkali metal is selected from sodium, potassium, or lithium.
