    摘要: A glass-impregnated, fiber-reinforced ceramic comprises a ceramic matrix having open voids, inorganic fibers embedded in the ceramic matrix in a regular or irregular orientation, and a glass matrix filling up the open voids in the ceramic matrix. The glass-impregnated, fiber-reinforced ceramic is manufactured by a manufacturing method comprising the steps of forming a fiber-reinforced ceramic comprising the ceramic matrix having open voids, and inorganic fibers embedded in the ceramic matrix, impregnating the fiber-reinforced ceramic with a glass precursor solution containing a glass precursor to stop up the open voids of the ceramic matrix with the glass precursor solution, and subjecting the fiber-reinforced ceramic impregnated with the solution to a heat treatment.

    摘要: An inorganic fiber having excellent properties as a reinforcement for metals, plastics and rubbers, which has a surface layer portion and an inner layer portion, the surface layer portion having a composition continuously changing from the inner layer portion to the fiber surface, and which is composed of a basic constituent unit of;(1) an amorphous substance composed of silicon, carbon, either titanium or zirconium, and oxygen,(2) an aggregate composed of;crystalline fine particles formed of at least one selected from the group consisting of .beta.-SiC, MC, a solid solution of .beta.-SiC and MC, and MC.sub.1-x, and having a particle diameter of not more than 50 nm,amorphous SiO.sub.2, andMO.sub.2, or(3) a mixture of the above amorphous substance (1) with the above aggregate (2),wherein M is titanium or zirconium and x is greater than 0 and less than 1,the inorganic fiber having an inner layer portion comprising 40 to 60% by weight of silicon, 20 to 40% by weight of carbon, 0.5 to 10% by weight of titanium or zirconium and 10 to 30% by weight of oxygen, and a surface layer portion comprising 0 to 40% by weight of silicon, 50 to 100% by weight of carbon, 0 to 8% by weight of titanium or zirconium and 0 to 25% by weight of oxygen.

    摘要: An inorganic fiber sinter consists essentially of (a) an inorganic substance (I) selected from the group consisting of (i) an amorphous substance consisting essentially of Si, M, C and O, (ii) an agglomerate consisting essentially of crystalline ultrafine particles of .beta.-SiC, MC, a solid solution of .beta.-SiC with MC and/or MC.sub.1-x, and amorphous SiO.sub.2 and MO.sub.2, and (iii) a mixture of the above amorphous substance (i) and the agglomerate (ii), and (b) an inorganic substance (II) selected from the group consisting of (iv) an amorphous substance consisting essentially of Si, M and O, (v) a crystal agglomerate consisting essentially of crystalline SiO.sub.2 and MO.sub.2, and (iv) a mixture of the amorphous substance (iv) and the crystal agglomerate (v), wherein M is Ti or Zr and x is a number of more than 0 to less than 1. Due to its high uniformity and high strength, the sinter is used mainly for internal combustion engine parts such as a piston ring and an auxiliary combustion chamber, and rocket engine parts such as a nose cone and a nozzle.
