A finite impulse response filter (FIR) for processing a communication channel. The FIR comprises a delay line, a tap processor and a summer. The delay line has “N” taps to successive portions of the communication channel. The delay line shifts the successive portions of the communication channel once in each symbol processing interval. The tap processor subjects each of the “N” taps to a first scaling utilizing first scaling coefficients associated with filtering the current symbol interval and further subjects at least one of the “N” taps to a second scaling by a second scaling coefficient associated with filtering the prior symbol interval. The summer generates in each symbol interval a filtered output comprising a sum of the “N” scaled taps from the first scaling in the prior symbol interval and the second scaling of the at least one tap in the current symbol interval, thereby increasing an order of the FIR without corresponding increase in an order of the delay line.

In one embodiment, the noise filter comprises a low pass filter. The low pass filter may includes a first multiplier with an input configured to receive the error signal, a third adder circuit with a first input connected to the output of the first multiplier and a second input connected to the output of a delay circuit, and a second multiplier with an input connected to the output of the third adder and an output connected to the delay circuit. In another embodiment, the noise filter may comprise an integrator that includes a multiplier with an input configured to receive the error signal and a third adder circuit with a first input connected to the output of the multiplier and a second input connected to a delay circuit. The input of the delay circuit is connected to the output of the adder circuit and the output of the noise filter.

An adaptive equalizer for use in a communication receiver that prevents equalizer operation divergence in response to slicer errors in a high noise communication application. The equalizer uses the difference between an equalized sample value and the nearest constellation point determined by the slicer both as the equalizer adaptation value and as a control value to selectively enable or minimize (disable) adaptation modifications. The difference is compared to a threshold value to determine whether the difference should be applied to the equalizer for adaptation purposes or a minimal value to prevent equalizer divergence in response to significant slicer errors. The threshold value is determined as a function of the ratio of the probability of correct slicer determinations and the probability of incorrect slicer determinations for a given sample value and a given signal to noise ratio. The threshold value may be predetermined as a constant for a particular communication application or may be dynamically computed as communications proceed.
