A first parameter associated with a writer preamp is defined. A write current of the writer preamp is adjusted in accordance with the first parameter so that an asymmetric signal is applied at a write head. The asymmetric signal results in symmetric writing of bits to a medium.

Method and apparatus for characterizing the flight characteristics of a read/write head. A disc is accelerated to a selected rotational velocity sufficient to aerodynamically support the head. The head is positioned over a portion of the disc non-accessible to customer data and a magnetoresistive element of the read/write is biased using a suitable voltage or current. A media noise landing signature obtained as the element transduces white noise from the surface identifies the head as a low-flying head.

Apparatus and method for writing data to a magnetic recording medium in the form of magnetization vectors having alternating magnetic orientations and lengths ranging from a minimum symbol length to a maximum symbol length. A write element adjacent the medium includes a leading edge and a trailing edge to form a write gap which generates a write gap recording field having a length substantially greater than the minimum symbol length. A write driver applies a write current signal to the write element as a series of current pulses, each pulse magnetizing an area of the disc corresponding to the length of the write gap recording field. A subsequent current pulse is applied while a portion of a first area magnetized by a previous pulse remains disposed between the leading edge and the trailing edge of the write element, so that the remaining portion of the first area beyond the trailing edge of the write element forms a magnetization vector of selected symbol length.

Apparatus for improving data writing operations to a disc recording surface of a disc drive. A head assembly is supported over the disc recording surface by a flexible suspension assembly of a controllably positionable actuator assembly and includes a write current shaping circuit integrated with a write element. The write current shaping circuit modifies write currents received by the head assembly via a transmission line from a preamplifier driver circuit to remove undesired characteristics from the received write currents. The write element writes data to the disc recording surface using the write currents as modified by the write current shaping circuit.

A data storage apparatus is provided in which a transducer provides a read back signal. A baseline shift correction network, operably coupled to the transducer, removes baseline shift from the read back signal and provides a corrected read back signal. In addition, a disc drive utilizing baseline shift compensation circuitry is disclosed.

A method for determining whether a data storage device read/write head is a low-flying read/write head or a non low-flying read/write head. A disc attached to a spindle motor is accelerated to an operating rotational velocity, the head is positioned over a portion of the disc non-accessible to customer data and a data pattern of selected frequency is written. A magnetoresistive element of the is biased and the data pattern is read while the disc is decelerated to a predetermined rotational velocity threshold. Occurrence of a read signal landing signature comprising readback signal amplitude modulation prior to reaching the predetermined rotational velocity threshold identifies the head as a low-flying head. Contrawise, non-occurrence of the read signal landing signature prior to reaching the predetermined rotational velocity threshold signifies the head as a non low-flying head.

A low inductance electrical spring connector for a disc drive interconnecting the conductors of a flex circuit support and seal apparatus to conductive traces on a PCB, the electrical spring connector having a dielectric housing with a plurality of spaced-apart insulator portions, and a plurality of conductive spring contacts disposed between the insulator portions. The dielectric housing forms an open ended insertion cavity disposable below the flex circuit support and seal apparatus. First ends of the conductive spring contacts are solderable to conductive traces on the PCB, while second ends of the conductive spring contacts are contact surfaces disposed in the insertion cavity . Inserting the conductors of the flex circuit adjacent the contact surfaces into the insertion cavity causes the contact surfaces to engage the conductors of the flex circuit to secure the flex circuit support and seal apparatus while providing electrical contact between the head-disc assembly and the printed circuit board.

An apparatus and method for performing real-time, closed loop write verification in a disc drive having a rotatable magnetic disc and a head having read and write elements. During a write operation, the disc drive generates a write current signal indicative of input data to be written to the disc. The write current signal is applied to the write element, which generates a time-varying magnetic field to simultaneously induce a readback signal in the read element through magnetic coupling of the read element to the write element, and to magnetize the disc to write the input data to the disc. The readback signal induced in the read element is used to reconstruct a set of output data which is used to verify accuracy of the input data.
