Abstract: Treating a cellulosic substrate, e.g., paper, wood or cork, by impregnating the surface with a complex phosphate of aluminium containing halogen and chemically bound molecules of a hydroxy compound which may be water or an organic hydroxy compound, and curing the complex, preferably by gentle heating. The complex is most conveniently used in solution in water or an organic solvent e.g., methanol, and the solution may contain further materials, e.g., an organic polymer. Products are more durable and less permeable than the original cellulosic materials.
