In one embodiment, the non-homopolymers exhibit solubility in the lower molecular weight alcohols. The non-homopolymers may be used in personal care or performance chemicals compositions. In one embodiment, the polymers are used in various personal care formulations, such as used for skin, sun, hair, and preservatives.
Abstract:
Provided are multifunctional polymers comprising at least one anhydride repeating unit with at least one pseudo-cationic moiety graft and at least one hydrophobic graft. The grafting functionalizations can occur before, during, or after polymerizing the monomer(s). The anhydride employed may be partially or fully opened to provide amic acids, carboxylic acids, carboxylic acidic salts, imides, esters, and mixtures thereof. The polymers also may comprise other repeating units, including, but not limited to, alpha-olefins. In one embodiment the polymers exhibit antimicrobial activity, and can be employed in a wide variety of compositions, including those where antimicrobial activity is useful. A method of providing microbial activity also is provided.

Abstract:
UV-absorbing compounds are disclosed that are derived from at least: (a) a UV absorber having at least one hydroxyl group, primary amine group, or secondary amine group, (b) a coupling agent having anhydride functionality, and (c) a graft host comprising an unsaturated fatty acid. These compounds absorb, scatter, deflect, or scatter ultraviolet radiation in a variety of personal care and performance chemical applications. R″ and R′″ are alkyl or alkenyl groups that naturally occur in oil.
Abstract:

The polymer comprises anhydride functionality, such as maleic anhydride or a derivative thereof, and the UV absorber contains at least one hydroxyl, primary amine, or secondary amine group. The personal care compositions may be used to treat and/or protect against burns, cancers, erythema, lentigo (“liver spots”), keratotic lesions, wrinkles, and cellular changes of the skin; and/or color changes, embrittlement, lack of luster, tangles, split ends, and/or unmanageability of the hair.
Abstract:
Described herein are multifunctional polymers comprising a first repeating unit having at least one pseudo-cationic moiety, a second repeating unit having at least a hydrophobic moiety, and a third repeating unit, where the weight-average molecular weight is less than about 10,000 Da. In one embodiment the polymers exhibit antimicrobial activity. Also provided are compositions formulated with the multifunctional polymers, and a method of providing antimicrobial activity.
Abstract:
Described herein are hemi-aminal ethers and thioethers of N-alkenyl cyclic compounds that may be produced through a reaction comprising: (A) at least one first reactant represented by a structure (I), wherein X is a functionalized or unfunctionalized C1-C5 alkylene group optionally having one or more heteroatoms, and each R1, R2, and R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and functionalized and unfunctionalized alkyl groups optionally having one or more heteroatoms, and (B) at least one second reactant having at least one hydroxyl moiety or thiol moiety. The hemi-aminal ethers and thioethers of N-alkenyl cyclic compounds may comprise a polymerizable moiety, in which case they may be left as-is or used to create homopolymers or non-homopolymers, or they may not comprise a polymerizable moiety. A wide variety of formulations may be created using the hemi-aminal ethers and thioethers of N-alkenyl cyclic compounds, including personal care, oilfield, and construction formulations.
