An opener assembly includes a single opener disk rotatably supported from a drawbar and angled approximately five degrees from the forward direction to define a shadow area behind the trailing surface of the disk. A material placement boot and delivery tube are supported adjacent the trailing surface substantially entirely within the shadow of the disk and have profiles conforming to the furrow profile. The boot and the outlet portion of the tube also lie within the periphery of the disk for protection. The tube has an upper portion with a round cross section which changes to an elliptical cross section towards the outlet to remain within the shadow while retaining high throughput capabilities. First and second wheels are supported on opposite sides of the disk to urge soil downwardly behind the outlet of the delivery tube immediately after the material is deposited. The immediate soil action caused by the closely spaced wheels pushes the material to the furrow bottom and prevents material bounce for more constant material depth. A short, lightweight wheel arm on the trailing side of the opener disk reduces assembly length and weight, and wheel bias towards the soil is primarily by spring action rather than weight for fast response to ground contours. The wheel on the leading side of the angled opener disk is supported behind the disk axis by an arm assembly which provides depth adjustment from the forward end of the drawbar. The wheels and the disk are angled generally in the same direction for handling trash.

A row cleaner device for a furrow forming row unit includes a support arrangement with a parallel linkage having a single acting hydraulic cylinder connected between upper and lower links. The cylinder extension is controlled by a hydraulic circuit to provide adjustable down pressure to maintain consistent operation of the cleaner devices in varying ground conditions. A tensioning device such as a spring extending generally parallel to the cylinder acts to retract the cylinder. A blocking valve can be closed to maintain the cleaner device in the raised position and can lock the cylinder in any desired extended position. An energy storage device such as a spring compressed between the cylinder and one of the links permits limited vertical movement of the linkage without change of cylinder extension to protect the device and accommodate obstacles and ground surface irregularities in the path when the cylinder is locked in position. The cylinder can be controlled as a function of the position of the opener, and, can be controlled to raise the cleaner device automatically with raising of the row units. The row cleaner can be supported in various positions and can be controlled remotely. The cleaner can be conveniently raised to the non-operating position to avoid undesirable ground contact.

A pair of angled disks supported by a four bar linkage from the upper end of the opener drawbar assembly clears trash from a narrow area in front of the opener. The four bar linkage has a virtual center located on or close to the center of the opener disk for good cleaning wheel tracking and for permitting the clearing disks to be spaced closely to the opener disk without interference between the disks. The clearing disks can rock vertically to follow ground contour and prevent excessive digging and soil movement. Shallow teeth on the disks also reduce soil penetration and soil disturbance.

The disk provides minimum tillage with little soil and trash throw to assure uniform planting depth, seed germination and plant growth without stimulation of weed growth, both in the row being cleared and in adjacent rows.

A combination seed and fertilizer opener having separate placement includes a first angled flat disk with a gauge wheel arrangement providing an initial furrow for a first material such as fertilizer. A second opener disk, smaller than the first and concave rather than flat, includes an edge that projects forwardly along the trailing side of the first disk to a forwardmost edge location adjacent the hub of the first disk. The hub of the concave disk is very closely adjacent the trailing edge of the large disk. A tube and boot assembly terminates within the concavity of the second disk near the rear periphery of the first disk. The concave disk forms a seed furrow to receive seed or second material from the tube and boot assembly. The front of the concave disk runs in undisturbed soil but is sufficiently close to the fertilizer furrow to press and cover the fertilizer. The second disk concavity also prevents excessive soil throw. The boot lies within the shadow of the large disk so that the boot does not have to push soil aside but acts primarily to prevent dirt from prematurely filling in the second furrow. A closing wheel is supported from the opener assembly directly behind the large disk and is angled to toward the concavity of the second disk to break soil from the seed furrow wall and close the seed furrow. The concave disk not only provides closing and furrowing functions with limited soil throw but also provides a compact bearing-receiving area. The edge of the concave disk is beveled on the inside of the concavity, opposite that of a conventional concave disk, to reduce forces necessary to form the seed furrow and cover the fertilizer.
