The device can comprise a microcontroller configured to be powered by the AC input. A zero-cross detector in communication with the microcontroller is capable of detecting when an AC waveform crosses zero and generating a corresponding pulse signal when the AC waveform crosses zero. A pulse analyzer can be included and configured to determine when the zero-cross detector is generating pulses exceeding a pre-determined time length threshold that represents a serial wiring configuration.

The device can be conveniently placed on and removed from the face, does not obstruct speech, and is suitable for wearing during a variety of normal daily activities to filter and condition inhaled air. The air permeable membrane can be impregnated with various liquids or other agents to enhance filtering and antimicrobial functions, or to provide cooling, moisturizing, or scenting of the inhaled air. The device can be provided with a detachable air permeable membrane which can be easily replaced as needed.

Signals from patient electrical activity for a plurality of electrode locations on a patient are analyzed. An electrode can be repositioned to different locations on the patient to obtain signals from patient electrical activity therefrom. A human perceptible output indicative of the quality of the signals for the plurality of locations is generated and a final electrode location on the patient for placement of the electrode for cardiotherapy is identified based on the human perceptible output.

An automated or semi-automated defibrillator (AED) system includes an AED and a cartridge attachable to the AED. The cartridge includes electrode pads and a power source such as a battery or fuel cell, which may recharge a defibrillator battery, power defibrillator circuitry, or both. Because the cartridge includes both a power source and electrode pads, one can replace the power source and the pads at the same time by replacing a single cartridge. Furthermore, in defibrillator systems where the power source charges the defibrillator battery, the power source can be selected to have the same life as the pads, thus making it practical to replace the power source and pads at the same time. In addition, maintenance for such a charging defibrillator system typically costs less than for a non-charging system because it often costs less to replace the power source than to replace the defibrillator battery.
