摘要： A coating apparatus comprises a coating chamber for coating the articles. The at least one preheat chamber is coupled to the coating chamber. The at least one loading station has a proximal end connectable to at least one of the preheat chambers when in an installed position at a distal end of the preheat chamber. The loading station further includes a carrier for carrying the articles and a drive system. The drive system is positioned to move the carrier between: a loading/unloading position of the carrier in the loading station; a preheat position of the carrier in the preheat chamber to which the loading station is connected; and a deposition position of the carrier in the coating chamber. A gas source is connected to the preheat chamber.

摘要： A method of processing an article includes heating the article in an atmosphere substantially free of oxygen to an oxidation temperature within a predetermined temperature range. The article includes a substrate and a bond coat disposed on the substrate. A partial pressure of oxygen is then established within the atmosphere after heating to the oxidation temperature. At least a portion of the bond coat oxidizes in the partial pressure of oxygen at the oxidation temperature to form a desired type of oxide to the substantial exclusion of forming other types of oxides. A ceramic coating is then deposited on the oxide.

摘要： An apparatus for coating a work piece includes a process chamber, a coating material supply apparatus located at least partially within the process chamber for delivering a coating material to the work piece, a pre-heater assembly adjoining the process chamber, and a support for holding the work piece. The pre-heater assembly includes a housing that opens to the process chamber, a susceptor comprising a ceramic material positioned at least partially within the housing, and a pre-heater electron gun configured to configured to direct an electron beam at the susceptor such that the susceptor radiates heat toward the work piece. The support is movable to selectively move the work piece between a first position within the housing of the pre-heater assembly and a second position within the process chamber and outside the housing of the pre-heater assembly.

摘要： In shot peening apparatus, a device is provided for sensing shot peening intensity and the uniformity of shot flow. It is basically comprised of a detector plate mounted on a cantilevered arm; torque created at the arm mounting due to the impact of shot is measured with a transducer. The detector is mounted on a structure adapted to translate the detector through a large shot peening zone. The invention is especially suited for assuring consistency in a process wherein uniform spherical shot is gravity accelerated to impact a workpiece with uniform velocity.

摘要： In apparatus for shot peening, gravity is used to accelerate uniform sized steel shot, and thereby impart a combination of good surface finish and uniform compressive stresses to workpieces. It is especially useful for finishing gas turbine airfoils. Shot is introduced into the peening enclosure (28) through a gate (40) at near zero velocity. It is then accelerated along a streamline (31) toward the workpiece (18) with uniform velocity. The workpiece, positioned along the streamline, can be manipulated in three rotational modes: oscillatory rotation to uniformly peen contoured surfaces of a workpiece, periodic incremental rotation to peen different sides of a workpiece; and, tilting motion to enable peening of shoulders (22). The apparatus is especially suited to peening fragile workpieces such as gas turbine airfoils (18). A diverter plate (44) intercepts the shot stream at times when repositioning of a fragile workpiece is undertaken. Thus, possibly damaging impacts are avoided and steady state operation is able to be promptly resumed.

摘要： Disclosed is a two step process of peening for workpieces having small radii fillets or fragile edges, such as gas turbine airfoils have. In the first step, relatively small size shot of less than 1 mm dia is used to impart a first peening intensity to a workpiece. This results in a first relatively rough surface finish. In the second step, shot of substantially uniform diameter in the range 1-2.5 mm is impacted with uniform velocity to provide a surface finish smoother than 30AA (10.sup.-6 inch). When fillets are peened, improved fatigue life results from the duplex process. When used on edges, where direct edge impact is avoided in the second step, deformed edges are avoided by the process. Yet the workpiece is substantially smooth and the edges have the requisite residual stress distribution.
