摘要： A high-density read-only optical disc, and an optical disc apparatus and method using the same. The apparatus and method record data on a lead-in area of a high-density read-only optical disc such as a BD-ROM (Blu-ray disc ROM (Read Only Memory)) in the form of pre-pit strings associated with an HFM (High-Frequency Modulated) groove applied to a BD-RW (Blu-ray Disc Rewritable). Moreover, the apparatus and method continuously apply the same tracking servo operation to an entire area of the same high-density read-only optical disc or rewritable optical disc. Therefore, the apparatus and method can simplify an algorithm for controlling a plurality of tracking servo operations, and avoid an increased size of the optical disc apparatus.

The method further provides for recording the data on the recording layer based on the read control information unit including the identifier of the corresponding recording layer on which the data is to be recorded.

In the present method, when main video data is recorded on a recording medium, playback speed information suitable to the video data is also written within a disc information table allocated in a control area that is located ahead of a data area including the video data. The present method is efficiently applicable to a high-density recording medium containing higher-quality video data that requires higher transfer rate than a digital TV broadcast stream that requires about 36 Mbps transfer rate.

An optical disc apparatus such as a BD-ROM player can maintain reproduction compatibility with the high-density rewritable optical disc such as the BD-RE. A user holding an optical disc apparatus such as a BD-RE recorder, etc. can be prevented from unlawfully copying data recorded on the high-density optical disc and reproducing the copied data.
