    摘要: An improved railway car underbody support structure and method for economically constructing same. The structure includes a center sill assembly having a pair of vertically disposed side plates spaced equidistant from the longitudinal center line of the car body and extending from a coupler longitudinally inboard to a wheeled truck assembly. The truck assembly carries two laterally spaced side bearing members for bearing the load of the car body during lateral tilting of the car body. One of the improved features is a unitary metal member cut from an economically patterned metal plate. The unitary members, which are themselves free of any weld lines which may crack under the extreme loads exerted on railway cars, are welded to the underside edge of a respective side plate and welded together beneath the center line of the car body. The unitary members act as, 1) a bottom side flange to stiffen the side plates, 2) a bottom cover plate to help integrate the still and 3) as a bottom bolster support which extends over a respective side bearing member. The invention also features a mini-bolster inwardly spaced from the main bolster to distribute the car body load through the still assembly; a unique side plate upper edge configuration and weld line placement; and a pair of reinforcing bars welded beneath the end of the car body on the inside vertical surfaces of respective side plates; all to provide improved structural underbody integrity and performance.

The cylinder lever is directly connected to a floating operating lever by a slack adjuster which can be made substantially shorter, lighter and less expensive than slack adjusters of prior art systems. With respect to the prior art, the present invention permits use of less linkages, shorter linkages and lighter linkages, thus making the overall linkage system lighter, less expensive and more efficient.

The hatch cover is held in closed position by a locking strap, and the vent passageway is located directly beneath the locking strap to help prevent rain and other environmental contaminants from passing through the vent passageway. An inexpensive baffle assembly is releasably clipped into the vent passageway beneath the locking strap and is comprised of a two piece molded plastic structure with a mesh screen held therebetween to further protect the vent passageway from contaminants.

    摘要: A retractable trailer hitch (1) for use on an intermodal railcar (C) supports an over-the-road trailer (T) of the railcar when the hitch is in its raised position. The hitch includes a hitch head (3) which is releasably securable to the king pin (K) of the trailer. The hitch head is supported by a first or generally vertical support strut (9) and by a second or a diagonal support strut (7), both of these struts being pivotally connected to the hitch head. The lower end of the first strut is pivotally secured in fixed position to the railcar and the lower end of the second strut is selectively locked in a fixed position with respect to the railcar when the hitch is in its raised position. A latch mechanism is carried on the lower end of the second strut so as to positively maintain the hitch in its raised position. The latch mechanism may be manually operated by a train attendant from the side of the car clear of the hitch so as to unlock the hitch and to permit movement of the hitch from its raised to its retracted position.

    摘要: An end structure for a railway car, and more particularly a covered hopper railway car, is disclosed which has side sill extensions extending diagonally inwardly from the ends of the side sills to the center stub sill for transmitting substantially all of the longitudinal, horizontal loads between the center stub sill and the side sills. A generally vertically extending truss is provided between the center stub sill and the end of the car above the center stub sill so as to withstand overturning moments and vertical loads between the end of the car and the center stub sill. A connector casting rigidly interconnects the side sills and the side sill extensions. A transition plate is in face-to-face engagement with the side sheets at the outer ends of the side sills so as to facilitate the transfer of load between the side sills and the side sheets. A cutout is provided in the bottom of the side sills at the ends thereof so as to enable interior welds to be made. A high strength steel cover plate closes the output. The connector casting has an integral roping staple.

The assembly comprises a vertical web member (23) the upper end of which is formed to fit about the outer surface of the shell (S) forming the tank. The size and orientation of the opening conform to the Association of American Railroads (AAR) design specifications for devices used in vertically lifting the car. Reinforcement plates (45a, 45b) are attached to at least one side of the web member, at the upper end thereof, to reinforce the member. The reinforcement plates are spaced from the opening and not adjacent thereto.
