摘要:
A percussively-ignited photoflash lamp having an hermetically-sealed glass envelope containing no glass-to-metal seals therein. Ignition of the lamp is achieved by applying a percussive force (e.g. striking) to an external surface of the envelope which results in actuation of an ignition means disposed within the envelope. The ignition means, preferably a frictionally disposed, spring-loaded wire having a quantity of pressure sensitive primer thereon, ignites a quantity of shredded combustible material (e.g. zirconium) within the envelope to produce the desired flash. A method of making the lamp is also described.

An improved pyrotechnic cap capable of being activated by the radiant energy from an adjacent flashlamp. The cap includes a light-transmitting plastic container with a quantity of pyrotechnic composition hermetically sealed therein. Receipt of the described radiant energy causes activation of the composition whereby the cap produces an audible signal of high intensity (e.g. 158 to 164 decibels at 25 centimeters). The improvement comprises adding a moisture-indicating material (e.g. cobalti, cobaltous cyanide) to the cap to detect harmful quantities of moisture present within the container and change color in a discernible manner as a result of said detection.

A two-part flashlamp assembly which comprises an actuating mechanism and a disposable flashlamp article containing therein several, e.g. ten, percussively-ignitable flashlamps. The flashlamp article is designed for easy positioning on and removal from the actuating mechanism which comprises a handle and movable trigger, in addition to an elongated support member.

A photoflash device which includes a plastic substrate, lamp-firing circuitry located on a first surface of the substrate, a disconnect switch also secured to the first surface of the substrate and electrically joined to the lamp-firing circuitry, at least one electrically activated photoflash lamp located above the switch for activating said switch upon ignition thereof, and a solid, light-transmitting polymer located about and encapsulating the glass envelope of the lamp. A thin, light-transmitting polyester member is located over the switch to protect the switch during formation of the device. The polyester member serves to prevent contact between the resin which forms the polymer and switch during thisformation, thus assuring close placement of the lamp's envelope and switch, said placement thereby assuring proper activation (e.g., severance) of the switch.

A method of making an electrically-activated photoflash lamp which includes a lead glass envelope, a quantity of shredded zirconium or hafnium combustible material and an ignition structure disposed within the envelope for igniting the combustible material upon application of a high voltage, low energy pulse thereto. The ignition structure includes a pair of metallic lead wires secured within one end of the envelope and having terminations which lie substantially flush with the interior surface of this end. A quantity of primer material bridges the terminations and is ignited upon application of the above pulse. The lead wires are secured and hermetically sealed within the envelope's end while the bulb is inverted, without the need for a press sealing operation. A method of axially adjusting the ends of the lead wires with respect to the bulb while the seal is hot is also disclosed.

A multilamp flashlamp assembly capable of emitting highly intense audible and visual signals and particularly adapted for alarm situations. The assembly utilizes percussive flashlamps which operate in conjunction with a respective plurality of pyrotechnic devices located about the assembly's transparent housing. Each device provides an audible signal in response to the energy received from the respective lamp when the lamp is fired.

A method of making a hermetically-sealed pyrotechnic cap is described which includes a plastic (e.g. polyethylene) container and a quantity of pyrotechnic mixture therein. Closure of the container is achieved by heat-sealing an end thereof.

For a signal device comprising a plurality of percussively ignitable flashlamps mounted on a support member and arranged in an array with respectively associated preenergized striker springs, a selective actuating mechanism for sequentially releasing the striker springs to fire respective flashlamps in response to successive hand actuated indexing. The selective actuating mechanism comprises a spring-loaded ratchet bar retained in a longitudinal channel in the support member in combination with a slidable member which is also retained in the channel in engageable contact with the ratchet bar. The lamps and striker springs are mounted in a row parallel to the channel with the strikers projecting beyond the periphery of the channel. The slidable member, which may comprise a folded flat spring having a first tang for engaging the ratchet bar and a second tang for engaging a surface of the channel, has a trip wire projection which is aligned with the projecting portions of the strikers. Upon successive hand actuation of the ratchet bar, the slidable member is indexed along the channel so that the trip wire projecting therefrom sequentially releases the preenergized strikers to fire respective flashlamps.

A method of forming a protective coating on a glass envelope of a photoflash lamp. The method comprises the steps of orienting the lamp within a mold member such that the external surfaces of the lamp's glass envelope do not contact the internal surfaces of the mold, depositing a quantity of powdered thermoplastic or thermosetting resin within the mold such that the resin surrounds the entirety of the glass envelope's external surfaces, simultaneously applying pressure and heat to the powdered material to cause it to liquify, and thereafter cooling the liquified material to form a light-transmitting, solid polymer member having the glass envelope located therein. Pressures within the range of about 500 to 8000 pounds per square inch were possible without fracturing the glass envelopes or adversely effecting the components therein. The finished product is ideally suited as one component of a multilamp photoflash device for use with many of today's cameras.
