The receiver (300) is adapted to receive a carrier signal modulated with an information signal having a pre-determined format. The format of the information signal determines the priority of the channel the carrier signal is received on. The steps of the disclosed method include monitoring the carrier signal of the highest priority channel with activity, and periodically scanning (126 and 128) other channels including decoding of their information signals. The decoded information signal is compared to the condition table of the receiver in order to detect a higher priority carrier signal. The higher carrier signal is then monitored and the channel priority table is updated accordingly (120 or 112).
