摘要: The length of an ink jet filament as a function of stimulation amplitude is measured in an ink jet printing apparatus by locating a narrow charging electrode near the drop break-off point of the ink jet filament, varying the stimulation amplitude to vary the filament length, and measuring the amount of charge imparted to the ink drops as the filament length is changed. Stimulation amplitude is automatically adjusted by as a function of the measured charge.

摘要: An ink jet print head includes a manifold defining a fluid receiving reservoir, and an orifice plate mounted on the manifold and defining a plurality of orifices which communicate with the reservoir. Fluid flows through the orifices and emerges as fluid filaments which break up into jet drop streams. A stimulator transducer contacts the orifice plate and, upon receipt of a drive signal, vibrates the orifice plate so as to cause bending waves to travel along the plate. The bending waves stimulate the breakup of the jet drop streams. A sensor transducer is mounted on the orifice plate at the opposite end thereof from the stimulator transducer. The sensor transducer produces an electrical feedback signal which is proportional in amplitude to the amplitude of the bending waves. This feedback signal is used by a drive circuit to control the amplitude of the drive signal applied to the stimulator transducer. The sensor transducer is calibrated by observing the breakup of jet drop streams as the drive signal is varied, and when an optimum breakup is observed, the output of the sensor transducer is adjusted to a predetermined amplitude level. This adjustment is made by applying D.C. pulses of proper polarity to the sensor transducer, poling the piezoelectric transducer.

The printer can also comprise a downstream guide, located proximate the sheet egress zone at a position downstream of the print zone printing means. In a related feature, the printer includes a carriage constructed to support a plurality of print heads so that each can traverse the complete line width of the print zone and a control means for synchronizing movement of the carriage with the platen to effect initial sheet feed. In another related feature the printer has a reference surface precisely parallel to the longitudinal axis of the feed/transport platen and carriage structure to index upon that reference surface during traverse.

摘要: Information relating to the impact position on a catcher face of a deflected ink jet is used to adjust various parameters of an ink jet printing system, such as the charge voltage, the time between orifice plate stimulation and drop charging, etc., or to check the occurrence of malfunctions such as crooked jets, misregistration between the charge plate and the jets, etc. According to the invention, means integral with the catcher cooperate with the ink flowing on the catcher face to vary an electrical property at said catcher face as a function of the portion of that face which is ink wetted. In one embodiment the jet impact position is derived from an electrical resistance measurement. In another embodiment this position is derived from a capacitance measurement.

摘要: A continuous linear array ink jet system and method is capable of depositing a predetermined amount of printing fluid of at least one color onto a linear array of pixels to form a predetermined image to be printed on a substrate. The invention comprises a chamber in fluidic connection to a source of pressurized print fluid. A plurality of orifices are situated in fluidic connection with the chamber to form an array of streams of print fluid from the plurality of orifices. Stimulation is used to synchronize break-up of the streams of print fluid into uniform streams of uniformly spaced drops. The printed density of the linear array of pixels is controlled by controlling the number of uniformly spaced drops on each pixel of the linear array of pixels, dependent on color density to be printed, whereby a totality of printed pixels forms a continuous tone value required to form the predetermined image to be printed.

摘要: A system is described for tracking a position of a receiver medium as it travels along a media path. A laser provides heat to the receiver medium in a localized area sufficient to permanently alter a physical property of the receiver medium thereby forming a reference mark. A sensor at a downstream position along the media path is adapted to sense the reference mark providing a sensed signal. The sensed signal is analyzed to determine a position of the receiver medium as the receiver medium passes through the second position along the media path by detecting a position of the reference mark.

摘要: A printing system for printing on a print medium is disclosed. A first linehead is disposed opposite a first side of the print medium. The first linehead defines print zones where a liquid is deposited onto the first side of the print medium. A plurality of transport rollers are disposed adjacent to the second side of the print medium. At least one transport roller is aligned with one of the one or more print zones of the first linehead. A vacuum manifold is disposed opposite the second side of the print medium. The vacuum manifold is aligned with the aligned transport roller and outputs a vacuum force that operates on the second side of the print medium to deflect the print medium causing an increase in the wrap angle of the print medium around the aligned transport roller.
