A multiple pane lighthouse assembly in a reference laser beam projecting apparatus includes a plurality of transparent panes disposed in an arrangement that defines a transparent window structure which permits transmission of laser light therethrough and has a generally polygonal cross-sectional shape. The window structure has spaced corners formed by pairs of adjacent ones of the opposite side edge portions of the panes. The side edge portions of the panes in each pair are offset relative to one another in forming a respective corner. The offset position of the side edge portions of each pair in forming a respective corner exposes only an interior edge on one of the adjacent side edge portions to laser light being transmitted through the window structure. The path of laser light through the adjacent side edge portions forming the corner is thereby affected only by one interior edge on the respective one of the adjacent side edge portions of the panels at each corner. The offset relationship also provides for the placement of adhesive to bond the side edge portions together in the shadow area of laser light being transmitted through the corner.

A system which is preferably employed in a laser alignment instrument produces up to five orthogonal beams from a single laser diode beam. In one embodiment the optics take advantage of the elliptical shape of the beam from a laser diode which when collimated produces a plurality of orthogonal beams by reflection off a plurality of 45.degree.-angled reflective surfaces intercepting outer portions of the beam. In one preferred embodiment a solid reflective element was four 45.degree.-angled facets to produce four beams from outer portions of a preferably non-elliptical beam, and a fifth orthogonal beam is produced by transmission of a central portion of the beam through the element. The element can be solid glass, or it can be glass or other material with a central hole.

A system preferably in the form of an accessory module corrects for tilt angles of a distance measuring laser projecting instrument. The housing of the module includes a compensating mirror mounted on a pendulum which bends with tilt angle by one-half the amount of the housing tilt, so as to reflect the outgoing beam to truly horizontal. In a preferred embodiment a fixed mirror is also included so that the distance measuring instrument can be laid or held approximately horizontally so that its generally horizontal beam is first reflected by the fixed mirror up to the pendulous compensating mirror. The distance measuring instrument preferably has an internal correction to subtract the additional optical path length induced by the use of the accessory module. This may be activated by a switch on the module or automatically when the module is attached to the distance measuring instrument.

A construction laser tool which projects a plumb beam is provided with a marking template, movable and separate from the tool's housing but securable to the housing, for transferring a point on a floor to the laser beam or, in another case, for transferring the beam to locate a point on the floor. The template has a marker such as a hole to receive a pencil, and the marker is positioned under the laser tool housing, on the vertical line of the plumb beam where the floor point of interest cannot be seen, when the plumb beam is projected at a point on the ceiling. To accurately mark the floor point, the user holds the template in place on the floor and moves the laser tool away to gain access to mark the point. The reverse procedure is used to align the plumb beam over a known point on the floor. Several arrangements involving sliding templates are disclosed.

An apparatus for use with a compact self-leveling construction laser for the purpose of allowing the user to remotely call or page the measurement beam to his location using a retroreflector. The apparatus uses an auxiliary plumb beam provided by the construction laser for scanning the job site in search of the cooperative reflector. The invention consists of a construction laser, motor driven turntable assembly to which the construction laser is attached and a cooperative reflector carried by the operator.

A gas valve which is particularly useful in a laser gas fill system requiring repeated fillings includes a conduit positioned between high and low pressure gas regions. Within the conduit is a restriction, and this restriction is closed by a meltable solid material. When the valve is to be opened, heat is applied to the meltable solid material, either internally or externally, causing at least some of the material to flow and allow the passage of gas from the higher pressure region to the lower pressure region. When the pressure between the two regions has substantially equalized, or at least the pressure differential has greatly diminished, surface tension associated with the restriction in the conduit pulls the liquified material back into place to close and reseal the valve, at which point heat application is dicontinued so that the material again becomes solid. The geometry of the restriction is such that all or substantially all of the liquid material will return essentially to its original position, allowing the valve to be used in repeated on/off cycles. Also, the valve geometry and heat application are such a high pressure differential will not cause the liquified material to blow away from the valve due to high velocities.

A tool for use in establishing a precise level line or plumb line or line for alignment uses a visible laser diode for projecting the line. The tool is relatively small and compact, drives the laser diode using batteries contained in the tool, and includes tilt compensation for use on surfaces which are not level, up to about 5.degree. off level, for still delivering a truly plumb or truly horizontal beam. A manual selector device is provided for shifting the beam from a vertical orientation to a horizontal orientation when desired. Specific forms of tilt compensation apparatus are disclosed.

A mounting system for a laser diode enables adjustment of the location of the diode and of the direction of the diode's beam. Fine adjustments may be made of the location of the diode in side-to-side, up-and-down, and forward-and-back directions as well as rotationally for azimuth and tilt angle. A mounting fork is connected to a frame for movement side-to-side on the frame, with two spaced prongs of the fork extending generally vertically. A diode holder block containing the diode is positioned between the prongs and has cylindrical, generally arcuately convex vertical edges engaged between the generally planar surfaces of the forked prongs. This enables the block to be moved for adjustment by sliding and rotational manipulation up-and-down, forward-and-back, rotationally about a vertical axis for azimuth, and rotationally about a generally transverse horizontal axis for tilt.

A grade rod and method of operation for use in a surveying system employing a laser beam which is rotated in a plane. A flexible tape formed with a graduated scale is mounted for movement in a loop within the housing. A slider on the tape carries a pair of closely spaced-apart light detectors as well as electronic circuitry which discriminates between laser beam pulses and sunlight. Output signals from the circuitry on the slider are fed into a control circuit in the housing through a flexible cable which is carried in a traveling loop. Scale indicators are mounted for movement with the slider along a fixed scale which is provided on the housing, and a manually operated cursor is mounted for movement along the housing. The control circuit includes means for driving the tape and slider in a search mode until a light pulse from the laser hits a detector, and then in a track mode for centering the detectors on the plane of the laser beam. A circuit is provided for returning the slider to its home position should the beam be interrupted for a period of time, and also for returning the slider to its home position should no laser beam be detected. A stutter-start circuit is employed for operation in a track mode for a short time period after activation before switching to the search mode.
