A method of improving the storage and handling characteristics of a condensed whey permeate (“CWP”) comprising the steps of: (a) obtaining a CWP that: (i) has a total solids content in the range of about 20% to about 75% by weight and has a water content in the range of about 80% to about 25% by weight; (ii) has a lactose concentration of at least 70% by weight of the total solids content; and (iii) is at a pH of less than 8; and (b) treating the CWP with at least a sufficient proportion of alkali to raise the pH to at least 8. Also, a method comprising the steps of: (a) obtaining a CWP that does not exhibit substantial crystallization; and (b) treating the CWP with at least a sufficient proportion of alkali to reduce the amount of crystallization obtained using a 30 mesh screen for a sample of the treated CWP relative to a sample of the untreated CWP when tested after storing for 7 days at a temperature range having an upper limit that is at least 28° C. (50° F.) below the sufficient temperature to dissolve at a pH of about 7 an equivalent concentration of lactose in water to the concentration of lactose to water that is in the untreated CWP. According to yet another aspect of the invention, a method is provided for utilizing a CWP in the feeding of a ruminant animal.

Methods of preparing a liquid suspension are provided. According to one aspect, the method includes mixing, simultaneously or in separate steps, at least: (a) a liquid source of digestible organic matter, wherein the liquid source of digestible organic matter includes: (i) water in a concentration of at least 25% by weight of the liquid source of digestible organic matter; and (ii) digestible organic matter in a concentration of at least 5% by weight of the liquid source of digestible organic matter, wherein the digestible organic matter comprises starch in a concentration of at least 10% by weight on a dry-matter basis. In general, the process comprises the steps of: (a) adjusting the pH to equal or less than three of an aqueous composition having a sugar concentration of at least 5 percent by weight; and (b) applying the aqueous composition to whole cottonseed. According to another aspect of the invention, the process further comprises the step of drying the whole cottonseed after applying the aqueous composition. According to a modified process of treating whole cottonseed to improve the handleability and digestibility of the cottonseed, the process comprises the steps of: (a) applying an aqueous sugar composition having a sugar concentration to of at least 5 percent by weight to the whole cottonseed; and (b) applying an acidic aqueous solution having a pH equal to or less than three to the whole cottonseed. According to yet another aspect of the invention, the treated whole cottonseed product of the process is used as a new feed ingredient for animal feed, particularly a ruminant.

The present invention provides a process that can utilize aqueous sugar-bearing sources, including food commodities, food-processing by-products, fermentation by-products, or other industrial by-products, in the making of a liquid animal feed ingredient that contains sugar and carboxylic acid salt. In general, the process according to the invention comprises mixing: (a) an aqueous sugar-bearing source characterized by having: (i) a total monosaccharide and disaccharide sugar content of at least 5.0 weight percent based on the amount of the aqueous sugar-bearing source, and more preferably, an invert sugar content of at least 5.0 weight percent based on the amount of the aqueous sugar-bearing source; and (ii) a water content of at least 10 weight percent; (b) carboxylic acid having in the range of 1-8 carbon atoms; and (c) inorganic base; wherein the step of mixing the carboxylic acid and the inorganic base is at least partially performed in the presence of the aqueous sugar-bearing source, and wherein the proportions of the aqueous sugar-bearing source, carboxylic acid, and inorganic base are selected such that: (i) the total monosaccharide and disaccharide sugar concentration is at least 3.0 weight percent of the resulting mixture; (ii) the carboxylic acid equivalent concentration is at least 0.5 equivalent per 1,000 g of the resulting mixture; (iii) the pH of the resulting mixture is at least 3.5; and (iv) the viscosity of the resulting mixture is less than about 40,000 centipoise when measured at about room temperature and at about standard atmospheric pressure. The inorganic base at least partially neutralizes the carboxylic acid to form the carboxylic acid salt in the resulting animal feed ingredient and the aqueous sugar-bearing source absorbs at least some of the heat of neutralization.
