An airboat and drive system for operating a pair of counter rotating air propellers that propel an airboat are described. An engine is mounted low in the hull of an airboat to lower the center of gravity and provide a more stable airboat. The drive system is connected to the engine through a drive shaft. The drive system includes a transmission, interconnecting frame, and counter rotating air propeller drive. The interconnecting frame mounts the counter rotating air propeller drive above the transmission providing proper clearance for the air propellers with the hull of the airboat. The transmission and counter rotating air propeller drive are connected through an interconnecting drive shaft. The amount of noise from a conventional belt drive is reduced. The modular design and simplified drive system is easier to assemble and align.

An airboat and selectable drive system for an airboat are described. The airboat may be configured for mounting an engine either high or low in the hull of an airboat. The selectable drive system is connected to the engine. The selectable drive system includes a transmission interconnected to an air propeller drive. A clutch has three positions to include forward, neutral, and reverse. The air propeller drive rotates the air propeller in one of two directions based upon the selected position of the clutch. The drive system has the capability to rotate air propellers at different speeds. The reverse speed of rotation of the air propellers may be higher or lower than the forward speed of rotation. The modular design and simplified drive system is easier to assemble and align for both configurations.

Spooling apparatus and method utilizing reels having generally radial slots in the end flanges. A filament is guided to a selected reel by a reciprocating traverse sheave. The traverse sheave is moved to one axial end of the full reel to arrange the filament in a winding reference plane adjacent to the inside surface of the flange at that end. A transfer sheave, which moves between the two reels in the winding reference plane engages the advancing filament and deflects it proximate to the empty reel to position a portion of the filament in a direction substantially tangent with the periphery of the empty reel while winding of the filament continues to the other reel. A throw pin momentarily deflects the filament from the winding reference plane to a cutting reference plane on the other side of the flange which places the filament in a position to be snagged by a snagger that rotates with the empty reel and cut on a stationary cutting element in the cutting reference plane. As soon as the filament is cut the snagged end is guided onto a spiral track, outside of the reel, to guide the filament from the point of snagging at the periphery of the flange to a point corresponding to the surface of the reel drum. A long end is formed on the track within one turn of the reel, and the filament is thereafter guided through the radial slot to be deposited on the empty reel drum for continued spooling. By leading the long end of the filament through a slot in the flange directly onto the drum, the filament is subjected to minimum stresses, deformations and bending while providing desired long ends.

A filament applicator includes a frame which defines a machine axis through which an elongate element may be guided at an application station at which filaments are to be applied to or introduce into the elongate element, such as an optical cable. A plurality of chambers are provided, each of which defines a chamber axis substantially parallel to the machine axis and mounted on the frame for rotation about the machine axis. Each chamber is substantially closed and has a panel at an axial end of the chamber which is movable between an open position for inserting and removing a wound package of filament material within the chamber and closed position for substantially sealing the chamber and preventing air turbulence within the chamber upon rotation about the machine axis. Each panel has an opening therein through which the filament material can be removed from the wound package. Each filament is guided from an associated opening in a door or panel of a chamber to the machine axis for winding about or introduction into the elongate element. By sealing the chambers during operation, the applicator speed can be significantly increased, above 500 rpm, while maintaining control over the relatively flimsy, lightweight and soft filaments, such as synthetic KEVLAR fibers.

An apparatus for making helically wound interlocked flexible pipe includes a rotating head mounted for rotation about a main shaft. Two supply spools of strip material are mounted on the rear side of the rotating head, a take off guide beam assembly being used to take off flat strip material from one of the spools, and guiding it to the rotating head. The rotating head is mounted on the main shaft for rotation therewith and supports a tool head assembly including a roller forming mill for forming the strip material. The strip is guided from a point behind the rotating head to a point in front of or downstream from the rotating head along the shaft. A face plate assembly, which supports the pressure rollers for closing and interlocking the successively adjacent turns of the formed strip, is axially spaced from the tool head assembly. A constant supply or reservoir of formed strip material, in the form of a loop in a substantially circular path, is provided to insure proper supply of formed strip material on demand to the pressure rollers. A sensor is used to monitor the instaneously contractions and expansions of the supply loop from its nominal size, such variations being utilized to modify and adjust the instaneous speed of rotation of the forming rollers. A rewinding system is used to rewind flat strip material on the other non-feeding supply spool. The apparatus assures simple and convenient start up of production of flexible pipe, and efficient operation without buckling or damage to the strip material.

A high speed rigid strander is described that has a rotatably mounted cage which includes a plurality of bobbin support members which are parallel to and angularly spaced about the axis of rotation of the cage. Each support member includes a locking mechanism for simultaneously locking or releasing an entire row of bobbins, each of which is spaced from the axis of rotation and has its longitudinal axis oriented generally radially or at an angle normal to the strander axis. Wire guides associated with each bobbin fly the wires off the bobbins under the action of external pulling forces without requiring the bobbins to rotate. Fly-off is generally radially inwardly against the action of centrifugal forces and the wires are guided towards the strander axis and then parallel thereto so that the wires from all of the bobbins can be brought to an end of the rotating cage and wound about a core wire. Also described is a loading and unloading system which can advantageously be used with the stranders of the present invention.
