A highly stable soliton source uses a bulk Er/Yb glass laser which operates in two longitudinal modes of the laser cavity with substantially identical amplitudes to generate beat modulation. The beat modulation is then passed through a pulse compression fiber which compresses the beat modulation into a train of soliton pulses. Because the beat modulation is between two modes of the same laser cavity, the soliton pulse train generated is highly stable with low timing jitter.

A wide dynamic range optical link using a double sideband suppressed carrier linearizer, the link comprising a laser source for producing a lightwave carrier output at a predetermined power level and wavelength, a double sideband suppressed carrier optical modulator having the lightwave carrier as a first input and an RF information-bearing signal as a second input, said double sideband suppressed carrier modulator comprising a signal splitter for dividing the lightwave carrier into primary and secondary carriers, a Mach-Zehnder optical modulator producing a modulated signal comprising information sidebands and a primary carrier component, a feedback controlled phase shifter in which the secondary carrier is shifted 180 degrees from the primary carrier phase, a signal combiner into which are input the modulated signal and the phase shifted secondary carrier, the combination of said signals causing the controlled suppression of the carrier component in the output of the signal combiner. A feedback loop controls the phase shifter. The double sideband suppressed carrier modular produces a suppressed carrier modulated signal output that is coupled to a linear optical amplifier for increasing the effective modulation index of the modulated signal output from the suppressed-carrier modulator. The output of the linear optical amplifier is connected to an optical fiber medium for transmission of the modulated signal.

An optically pumped single mode laser, e.g., Nd:YAG crystal (20) with planoconcave mirrors is increased in efficiency by an order of magnitude to about 8% by optics (25, 27) for focusing the high power multimode output of laser diode arrays (21, 22) into the mode volume (20') of the laser medium (20). A plurality of these optically pumped single mode lasers (1-4) may be cascaded in a ring with dichroic mirrors (M.sub.1 -M.sub.4) at the corners for coupling in the laser diode arrays, each having its own means for spatially tailoring its beam to concentrate pump distribution inside the lasing mode volume of the medium. An InGaAlAs pump diode (30) with its wavelength the same as the lasing medium makes the ring unidirectional.

An intracavity frequency-modified laser of improved amplitude stability is obtained through the use of a plurality of nonlinear optical crystals within the laser cavity. Extremely low noise operation of such a multiple crystal laser is achieved by measuring the noise in its output radiation as a function of the temperature of its optical cavity and maintaining the cavity temperature at a value that results in low noise production during subsequent operation.

A multi-functional optical isolator that couples radiation from a plurality of input fibers to a plurality of output fibers such that an optical beam emitted from any particular input fiber is transmitted only to its corresponding output fiber. Additionally, an optical beam emitted in the reverse direction from any output fiber is not transmitted back into any of the input or output fibers. The multi-functional optical isolator includes a first focusing lens that collimates the optical radiation emitted from the input fibers and causes them to pass through an optical isolator. The optical isolator has polarizing elements and a magneto-optic polarization rotator. A second focusing lens focuses the optical beams into the output fibers such that the optical radiation from each input fiber is coupled to its corresponding output fiber. Additional off-axis optical elements at other wavelengths may be used for providing bulk-optic coupling of a pump light into a single-mode or multi-mode core of a doped fiber. A vee-shaped isolator with a high reflector in the isolated beam path is possible and provides for additional beams coupled through the reflector.
