The first photosensitive layer contains a charge generating material, a binder resin including a polyarylate resin with repeating units (1), (2), (3), and (4), an electron transport material, and a hole transport material.
The electron transport material includes a compound represented by formula (10), (11), or (12). The hole transport material includes compounds represented by formulas (21) and (22):
A percentage content of a number of repeats of the repeating unit (3) to the total number of repeats of the repeating units (1) and (3) is greater than 0% and less than 50%. A percentage content of a number of repeats of the repeating unit (4) to the total number of repeats of the repeating units (2) and (4) is at least 35% and less than 70%.

A multi-layer electrophotographic photosensitive member includes a conductive substrate and a photosensitive layer. The photosensitive layer includes a charge generating layer and a charge transport layer. The charge generating layer contains a charge generating material. The charge transport layer contains a charge transport material, a binder resin, and silica particles. The charge transport layer is a monolayer. The charge transport layer is disposed as an outermost surface layer of the multi-layer electrophotographic photosensitive member. The silica particles have a content of at least 0.5 parts by mass and no greater than 15 parts by mass relative to 100 parts by mass of the binder resin. The binder resin includes a polyarylate resin. The polyarylate resin has a repeating unit represented by general formula (I) shown below. In general formula (I), R1-R3 and Y are defined as those described in the specification.

The photosensitive layer contains an electron transport material. The electron transport material has a reduction potential of at least −0.88 V and no greater than −0.66 V versus a reference electrode (Ag/Ag+). The single-layer electrophotographic photosensitive member has a leakage onset voltage of at least 5.0 kV in a high temperature and humidity environment at a temperature of 30° C. and a relative humidity of 80%. The leakage onset voltage is a voltage applied to the single-layer electrophotographic photosensitive member at which current leakage starts.

A positively chargeable electrophotographic photosensitive member has a photosensitive layer. The photosensitive layer at least includes the following layers layered in the stated order: (I) a charge transport layer at least containing a hole transport material and a binder resin; and (II) a charge generating-and-transporting layer at least containing a charge generating material, an electron transport material, a hole transport material, and a binder resin all within this layer. The binder resin contained in the charge transport layer is different from the binder resin contained in the charge generating-and-transporting layer, and either of the binder resins contains a polyvinyl acetal resin.
