An electronic device has a normal mode, a weak power-saving mode, a strong power-saving mode, and a power-saving temporary mode. The power-saving temporary mode is temporarily switched every time a specific timing arrives while a specific condition is unsatisfied in the strong power-saving mode. The power-saving temporary mode reduces power consumption of at least a part of the hardware element in the power-saving temporary mode compared with the power consumption in the weak power-saving mode. The strong power-saving mode reduces power consumption of at least a part of the hardware element in the strong power-saving mode compared with the power consumption in the power-saving temporary mode. The power mode switching unit switches to the weak power-saving mode when the specific condition becomes satisfied in the strong power-saving mode.

An image forming apparatus includes an image forming section, a sheet output tray, an operating section, an operation acceptance section, a human body detection sensor, a communication section, a command acceptance section, and a control section. When the command acceptance section accepts a print job command from an external device while a human body is being detected by the human body detection sensor provided at the front of the image forming apparatus, the control section suspends a print job based on the print job command.

The image forming apparatus executes a process of generating image data of an alternative image involving a smaller consumption quantity of color material than an image contained in a replacement-object area and then generating replaced image data in which the image data of the replacement-object area has been replaced with the image data of the alternative image, and the control section instructs a printing section to execute color material-saving printing of printing an image based on the replaced image data on a sheet. The alternative image is an image containing information for allowing an image based on the image data of the replacement-object area to be displayed by an information terminal that has read the alternative image.

An electronic device includes a plurality of processes, an interrupt waiting unit for each of the processes, and an interrupt handler. The interrupt handler processes the interrupt. The interrupt waiting unit sets an interrupt waiting flag to wait for an occurrence of the interrupt. The interrupt handler, when the interrupt occurred, sets an interrupt style of the occurred interrupt and releases the interrupt waiting flag from the set state. The interrupt waiting unit, when the interrupt waiting flag was released from the set state, sets the interrupt waiting flag if the interrupt style set by the interrupt handler is not an interrupt style matched with the process, and operates the process if the interrupt style set by the interrupt hander is the interrupt style matched with the one of the processes. The interrupt waiting flag is located to each of the processes.

To provide a technique that makes it possible, for a user without conscious of the detailed firmware program contents and the current state of a device, to execute an update process in a case of using file in which plural firmware programs are packaged. Upon connection of an external auxiliary storage device that stores the package file, a detection of a firmware program to be updated turns a staring mode into an update mode for updating a firmware program. If a failure in an internal auxiliary storage device is detected after re-starting, a starting is made by the update mode using a firmware program in the package file. In a case where a firmware program that is to be installed into the flash memory is updatable, only the firmware program that is to be installed into the flash memory is installed and updated.
