An improvement in the process of melt spinning ethylene terephthalate polyester to produce textile fibers with decreased pilling in the threads, fibers or fabrics made therefrom. The ethylene terephthalate is melt polymerized in the presence of a condensation catalyst to a final temperature of about 250.degree.C - 300.degree.C and a final pressure of less than 10 mm mercury to form an anhydrous melt. A substituted cyclobutanedecarboxylic acid, preferably .alpha.-truxillic acid, is added to the melt-polymerization at a concentration of about 0.05-5 molepercent of the acid component. Melt spinning of the modified polyester is carried out and the fibers are irradiated with high energy light.

The vinyl copolymer has the following general formula- ##STR1## where N IS AN INTEGER FROM 10 TO 10,000;a is zero or an integer from 1 to 100;b is an integer from 1 to 100;R.sup.1 through R.sup.6 are hydrogen, an alkyl group with 1 to 3 carbon atoms or an oxalkyl group -OR.sup.7 ;R.sup.7 is an alkyl group with 1 to 6 carbon atoms or an aryl group with 6 to 10 carbon atoms;X.sub.1 is hydrogen, an alkyl group with 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a carboxyl group, an esterified carboxyl group; andX.sub.2 is a carboxyl group, a hydroxyl group, an esterified carboxyl group or an esterified hydroxyl group.

A flow-promoting device in combination with a heated box tray open at the top in a reaction and degasification column in which a viscous or highly viscous liquid is flowing from an inlet end to an outlet end of the tray and in which a heating tube register is located to be completely covered by the liquid. The tube register includes a plurality of heating tubes spaced from each other, and the flow-promoting device has a bottom heating unit for the box tray positioned outside and along the bottom of the tray, a siphon plate mounted on the tray at a liquid inlet end of the tray and closely in front of the tube register, with the siphon plate having a bottom end extending to the underside of the tube register, and a weir positioned at the liquid outlet end of the box tray. The weir has a top edge extending at least to the topside of the tube register, and the spacing of the weir from the tube register is larger than the spacing of the siphon plate at the inlet end from the tube register.

C., and by utilizing as catalyst a tin(II) salt of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid of up to 18 carbon atoms, of an aromatic or araliphatic monocarboxylic acid of up to 36 carbon atoms, of an aliphatic or aromatic hydroxy-, poly-, ketocarboxylic acid or of a dicarboxylic acid of up to 18 carbon atoms; or a mixture of an organotin compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, or aryl or aralkyl of 6-36 carbon atoms, and an O,O-dialkyl-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-phosphonate wherein each alkyl is of 2-18 carbon atoms.
