The present invention discloses a method and corresponding apparatus utilizing UV-A and UV-C for treatment of textile materials. The method comprises the steps of (a) exposing incoming textile materials to UV-A radiation for detection of optically brightened textile materials and/or synthetic fiber materials; (b) separating detected optically brightened textile materials and/or synthetic fiber materials from the incoming textile materials; (c) exposing the separated incoming textile materials to UV-C radiation for sterilization and surface modification of the textile materials to increase wettability and absorbability and reduce pilling. The apparatus comprises an enclosed segregation chamber disposed with a cascading conveying means, a UV-A radiation source and an optically brightened textile materials and/or synthetic fiber materials separating means therewithin, and an enclosed segregation chamber disposed with a UV-C radiation source therewithin.

Methods to treat and produce articles of manufacture that are activated with an electromagnetic and electrical charge to produce activated articles of manufacture and formulations are provided garments. One aspect of the invention is directed toward activated garments and apparel. Our results described herein showed that the fabric sample treated with the activation process according to the invention released more electrons than the control sample. The treated fabric samples released electrons with a lower average energy, making the water of the treated fabric sample more prone to release electrons. Another aspect of the invention is directed toward providing methods and activated formulations for treating various aliments. One formulation described is an activated topical formulation for improving the strength and vitality of nails.

Mattresses infested with bed bugs and/or dust mites may be cleaned and sanitized through a series of steps beginning with UV irradiation of the mattress. Next, the mattresses are subject to dry steam of a temperature of approximately 356° F. Odors are then removed from the mattress by immersing the mattress in ozone. The mattress is then vacuumed to remove debris and waste. Next the mattress is heated with infrared heaters which produce a temperature of up to 265° F. Finally, the mattress is again vacuumed to remove any remaining debris. The system is mounted on an enclosed trailer so that the system may be transported to a home, hospital, hotel or dormitory to clean and sanitize the mattresses. The system may also be contained within a building for a more permanent location.

Epoxy resin and carbon dioxide are used as major raw materials to form cyclic carbonates to be reacted with a functional group oligomer, and then amino groups in a hydrophilic (ether group) or hydrophobic (siloxane group) diamine polymer are used for performing a ring-opening polymerization, and the microwave irradiation is used in the ring-opening polymerization to efficiently synthesize the amino-terminated PU prepolymer, and then an acrylic group at an end is added to manufacture an UV cross-linking PU (UV-PU) oligomer which can be coated onto a fabric surface, and the fabric is dried by UV radiation for a surface treatment to form a washing-resisted long lasting hydrophilic or hydrophobic PU fabric.

The welding of certain polymeric nanofibers can be accomplished by exposure to an intense short burst of light, such as is provided by a camera flash, resulting in an instantaneous melting of the exposed fibers and a welding of the fibers where they are in contact. The preferred nanofibers are composed of conjugated, conducting polymers, and derivatives and polymer blends including such materials. Alternatively, the nanofibers can be composed of colored thermoplastic polymeric fibers or opaque polymers by proper selection of the frequency or frequency range and intensity (power) of the light source. The flash welding process can also be used to weld nanofibers which comprise a blend of polymeric materials where at least one of the materials in the blend used to form the nanofiber is a conductive, conjugated polymer or a suitable colored thermoplastic. Alternatively the material blend used to form the nanofibers may comprise a polymeric material containing a colored additive, which is not necessarily a polymer, for example carbon black, or a colored nano-particulate organic or inorganic material, dye or pigment.

The textiles can receive, a plurality of times, active substances, or active ingredients, which can be deposited in a isotropic manner to the surrounding medium or in an anisotropic manner in a directly adjacent layer by means of a locally oriented material flow. The dressing layers are characterized by their ability to swell and to receive active substances. Polymer layers form nano pockets during swelling which can receive one or several guest molecules. The active substances can be deposited when the loaded textiles are worn and absorbed by the skin of the wearer, either cutaneously or percutaneously, to produce the desired effect.
